The UK is a great place, but for an American one of the most difficult things to get used to is the TV. The television shows of any country dramatize and laugh at things which are unique to the culture. The reason this gets so much attention and controversy between Americans and Brits is because our language is the same, but our culture can be so different sometimes. Someone from England watching America TV just doesn't get why we'd prefer the American version of The Office, and vise versa. This is why I need to have access to my Hulu account when I go to the UK. I can't drink every night for the two weeks I'm there, so I like to hang out in the hotel room and watch Hulu in The UK on my iPad.
You may be in a similar situation to me and you may be surprised that I can stream video from Hulu outside The USA. I'll explain how I do it.
First, I always make sure that my Hulu account is up to date. I'm a Hulu Plus member because they have way more TV shows than the free version. Considering I watch an hour or two of TV a day, I got through the free stuff pretty fast. Sure, there are still episodes of Slider I haven't seen yet, but I'm just not into crappy 90's TV. I like CSI, 24, House, and these other high quality TV shows that have come out in the past five years or so. With a Hulu Plus account I can get over three hundred episodes of The Office. Cool, right? Also, remember that you can only watch Hulu in The UK on iPad and iPhone - Hulu doesn't have an Android app yet (though it's coming out soon)
The reason I watch Hulu in The UK on my iPad and not iPhone or laptop is simple. Convenience. Laptops are great for work but they're getting old-school pretty fast. For entertainment, Apple products are the way to go. There's no cooler feeling that busting out your iPad in a cafe, strapping on some headphone and watching a movie. People will pretend to not look, but they're all thinking, wow, that's a great idea. And although it is possible to use iPhone to stream Hulu in The UK, the screen is just too small. It's great if you suddenly need to show your friend a clip of whatever you saw last night, or in boredom emergencies, but the iPad really strikes a great balance of size vs user-friendliness.
The last thing, and just as important as the other is called a VPN. A VPN gives you access to a VPN server in The USA (and other places if you want). When you are signed into a VPN sever in The US, your IP address is temporarily changed to a US IP address, making Hulu think that you're in The US. If this is your first time leaving The US, you should know that you normally can't access your Hulu account from outside The USA. Hulu restricts access to users inside the US. However, with a VPN it's possible to change your IP address and watch Hulu in The UK on iPad.
All you have to do is sign up for the VPN services, download the VPN file, open it, and install it on your iPad. You should be looking for a L2TP VPN to watch Hulu in The UK on your iPad. All of the username, password, and settings can be changed and set up in the General Settings area of your iPad. A L2TP VPN for iPad is the preferable VPN protocol. It's faster and more secure than other VPN protocols typically used on mobile devices. It should only take a minute or two to get set up, and one you do there's really nothing else to worry about. When you get bored of British television and want to watch some awesome American TV shows on your iPad, just go into Settings, turn the VPN on, wait for it to connect, and then you've got an American IP address. Go to Hulu's site and choose the TV show you want. Easy!
