Why is my computer slowing?

When you took your new computer out of the box a set it up it was fun to explore all of the new things it could do.  One of the best things about it was its speed.  Compared to your old computer it blazed, but as time has past your computer began slowing.  Now your once mighty stead limps along like an old nag and your slowing computer is causing you to tear your hair out.

What Makes A Computer Slow Down

The most common causes of a slowing computer are hidden applications that have collected on your computer and/or old parts of software and registry entries that have been left behind by uninstalls and updates of your computers applications.

Hidden Software Can Slow Down A Computer

There are many kinds of hidden applications that are installed on your computer. Some of it is installed by your permission but some of it is installed without your knowledge or permission.  When you visit certain websites they will install applications on your computer that will monitor your computer use in order to serve targeted ads to you.  Sometimes this hidden software gets on your computer when you down load free applications such as screen savers.  The bottom line is that as hidden application after hidden application installs on your computer more and more CPU cycles are eaten up along with your system memory.  This will slow down a computer as time goes by.  This is sometimes referred to as slowing computer syndrome.

Slowing Computers Because Of Registry Problems

The registry can be the culprit in slowing your computer down as time goes by.  The registry is a data base on your computer that holds all of the information about the software and hardware on your computer.  When you install a new piece of hardware such as a printer or new video card all of its particulars are registered in the registry.  When the computer is called on to use the hardware it will consult the registry to find out where it is located, what its current status is and much more. This allows the computer to access the hardware rapidly and efficiently.

When you install a new piece of software, all of its particulars are also registered in the registry.  Where it is located, what icons are associated with it, where its files are kept and much more.  When you start a computer program by clicking on its icon this information is retrieved from the registry so the computer can quickly load and execute the program.

With out the registry a computer would have to search through its hard drive and hardware in order to find what it needed to execute the program.  This would make the computer very, very, slow.

As time goes by a lot of information is put into the registry and erased from the registry as new software and new hardware is added and the old software and hardware is removed.  Unfortunately the scripts that uninstall the hardware and software often leave the old entries in the registry.  Over time these old entries slow your computer down because the computer has to go through all of these entries to try and find the correct one.

Slowing Computers Caused By Fragmented Registries

Besides old entries corrupting your registry, your registry can become fragmented physically because the computer's hard drive has so many gaps left in it.  This increases the seek time of your computer's hard drive.  This really makes your computer slow.

Slowing computers are a pain in the neck but the good news is that there are things you can do short of buying a new PC that can make your slowing computer run like new again.  Visit my blog, for a lot more information on this problem.
