With I-pad, Kindle, smart phones and other gadgets making their entry in the market, it looks as if the printed books would cease to exist. These latest gadgets have revolutionized reading. Also, the ease and convenience it offers has never been offered to end users before.
The printing book industry might be shrinking, but it’s too early to write off these printed books. Here's why:
Experience - Unique in itself
Holding a hard bound book and reading the content offers an experience which the gadgets on the market can’t provide. Also, the touch of each page and the smell of a fresh book as you quickly flip the pages is a moment to savor.
Besides, a book operates by themselves. They don’t need any supporting application to provide content. As long as there is demand for these, the printed book will continue to exist.
Agree that the gadgets have revolutionized reading, but nothing to beat the conventional book. Besides this, it’s much easier to gift books to someone rather than the pricy gadgets. Books also provide some tangibility which many avid readers value.
Income Disparity – Different Mindset
Everyone has an opinion on what to buy, and what to adapt. This decision is also based on one’s buying power, knowledge, awareness and willingness.
Many people don’t have access to technology. So for such people the conventional books would be far more affordable than books accessed via gadgets.
For some, it’s the financial condition coupled with buying powers which tilts the scale as to go for digital books or stick to hard copy books.
And there is that elusive group of people who abhors gadgets and would prefer to read the print book.
Unless the entire globe is digital, it would be difficult for books to reach to remote corners of the world. This void can and easily be filled by printed books.
This view is not only for readers, but will apply to writers, authors too. Until technology is adopted by each and every one, printed books will continue to exist.
Innovation – Print & Digital
As digital innovations are making big strides; so is the print technology. As new business models are evolving, print technology is also catching up to grab new avenues.
The traditional chain of business between author, publisher, distributor, and retailer has undergone a change. Self-publishing is the in-thing. This new trend is done both online and offline. Also, there are online sites which allow printing books on demand.
Innovations in digital technology are providing boon to humans. Publishing and distribution has become very easy and swift. Also, they save our planet by preserving trees.
With technological advancement; publishing house may become a point for collection of rare and out of print books. But till such time, books will persists and continue to provide the utility which has never been altered or untouched.
