Modern Ideas About Twisted Ankle Treatment

Twisting your ankle can be a real drag. I twisted my ankle last year in a running mishap, I know what it can do. In general, an ankle sprain is not considered a serious injury, but in many ways it can be more serious, and more painful than an ankle break. Why? For one, it's more difficult to heal properly. The healing process for a broken ankle is more cut and dry. More black and white. There's broken, and not broken. When you go to the doctor, they set the bone, and there's a clear healing process that you can be sure what is injured, and what is healed. A twisted ankle is a bit different. You can get around on a mildly twisted ankle. You can actually do without any twisted ankle treatment and be alright. The problem is that without the proper twisted ankle treatment it's easy to re injury the ankle. Without the proper twisted ankle treatment, you could have problems with this ankle for years and years.

So what is proper twisted ankle treatment? There are two different schools of thought. The traditional school of thought is to rest, and the ankle will heal itself with the proper kind of rest period. This involves RICE. Resting, icing, compression and elevation are the four steps that just about every athlete had heard throughout his athletic career. Regardless of your what school of thought your twisted ankle treatment thoughts belong to, this is still very useful. RICE can help to reduce swelling, and keep the formation of scar tissue to a minimum. Scar tissue is the number one reason for twisted ankle re injury.

However, there is a new school of thought that has appeared in the last decade or so that says that twisted ankle treatment should be more active. A more active approach to twisted ankle treatment means that your recovery time should involve movement and workouts with your injured ankle. Flexibility and strength exercises should be combined with rest in order to further prevent the formation of scar tissue and promote the break down of the scar tissue that does form. The also prevents the setting of the ankle and encourages flexibility of the joint. I wish I knew about this earlier.

When I twisted my ankle last year, I used RICE. It took me about two weeks to be able to walk on the area, and I dealt with stiffness and uncomfortableness for months. For about six months I was always afraid to re twist the joint because it just "didn't feel right". How do you find out about this active twisted ankle treatment? HEM ankle rehab does a great job of explaining how to use active exercising to promote proper ankle recovery and speed recovery time up as well as increase the quality of your joint flexibility and strength.
