You remember the old sales pitches, right? The ones that started with, so you want to be a...and then they would fill in the blanks. This is not going to be any of those kind of things. Honestly, did they ever really work on anyone in the first place? Getting a personal trainer license is not only a great way to get started on a new career, it can be pretty necessary if you are going to make that career in the health and fitness industry.

If you haven’t noticed, there are dozens of people entering that very industry every year- new graduates from the best programs flood the markets and snap up the cushiest of cushy jobs while the others are left fighting for the remainders. If you want to be able to pick and choose where you work and the clients that you will be working with, you have to start by getting your personal trainer license.

Let’s back up a little bit here, back to the beginning. The best way to start out on any career, especially one that is going to require a license, is with education. In some states, you can be a certified or licensed personal trainer without having passed the basic educational requirements first. The more education and training you have, the better you will be able to help others reach all of their fitness goals. A personal trainer license is also something that is going to be required to be employed in the most elite locations in your area.

Aside from having a personal trainer license, you will also need to find a few clients to get you started. If you can’t show new clients endorsements, they may be reluctant to start with you. In some gyms or health clubs, the clients are assigned to the personal trainers to begin with and then may make a change after a few sessions. Your goal is to be the personal trainer that everyone is requesting.

But, your first step is getting the right education that will help you get your personal trainer license. There are programs at community colleges as well as at larger universities. In most cases, the only difference in the training you get is in the cost, although with the universities and larger colleges, you may get a few additional classes that you do not get with the smaller schools. After you finish your education, you will be able to apply for the licensing exam. You may have to put in a few weeks of internship before you apply for a personal trainer license of your own.

Once you do get your license, you will need to decide whether you want to work as an independent trainer or if you want to work in a local gym or spa. In some areas, there are some locations that are the top of the line in the industry, the ultimate goal. Your career starts with earning your personal trainer license.
