Personal Training Myths That Won\'t Go Away: Lies Your Trainer Just Keeps Repeating

Personal trainers, including those with all of the proper certification certificates and training may be doing you a great disservice because they feed off some of the most common myths in the fitness industry. While most trainers do receive admonishment not to give out health advice to their clients, may continue to do so, but at more than their own risk. Some of the clients that are coming to the trainer do so because they are just genuinely bewildered, at their wit's end and do not know where else to turn. They want answers and they want help. That can be a tricky situation for the trainer who is torn between helping and not giving too much advice. There are several areas where the trainers might be doing more harm than good.

First, nutrition. Unless your personal trainer has a degree in the field, they should not be giving you advice on your diet or your nutritional needs. Even worse if the trainer is also schilling for a company on the side, a practice most gyms will consider a fireable offense, you might get roped into unhealthy and potentially unsafe supplements, bars and meal replacement shakes. Get your diet advice from your doctor or a nutritionist, leave the training to your personal trainer.

Second, common myths that will not die- but have been proven to be unfounded in more than a few studies. For instance, trainers tell their clients to spend ten to twenty minutes cooling down after a workout so that they are not sore. The old school of thought was that lactic acid built up in the muscles during exercise caused the soreness afterward and that a gentle cooldown process would release that lactic acid from the body. According to the latest research, unless you are doing a lengthy or high intensity workout, you really do not need to bother with the cool down, especially if you are short on time. However, if you have done something that has your heart pounding, then take a few minutes to let your heart rate come back down before hitting the showers.

Finally, another area that the personal trainers are often caught up in the myth of is the pre-workout stretch. According to doctors who specialize in treating sports and exercise related injuries, most strains happen before exercise even gets started- because people have been told to stretch improperly. Starting with cold muscles is a sure way to end up with an injury and may also decrease your endurance and performance when you get started.

Amie, thanks so much for this info. Now I don't have to feel guilty about not stretching before hand. It feels much more natural to do it afterwards when I'm all warm.

Some trainers get so hung up on the old way of thinking. I know that I am by nature a little more flexible than other people, especially, in my age group, but that doesn't mean that I should stretch just from cold either. It is frustrating when you see people on the bike path just KILLING their joints because they do not know any better.!
