What Are the Benefits Of Strong Abs?

It seems so often that when the media conveys people whom are in shape that these people are almost always shown with a set of nice flat abs. It's obvious that they are sought after for personal appearance reasons, but what are some other benefits of strong abs?

Stability During Other Exercise

As an individual who has been exercising since middle school (I'm now 20), I've found and also confirmed from others that having a strong stomach helps you keep stable during other exercises. You'd be surprised how many movements also employ the abdominal muscles as well. Having a strong stomach is an essential foundation for bodily strength and injury protection. Your abs make up your entire front half of your core and therefore have a big impact on your performance during many exercises. This leads in to the next benefit.

Protection From Back Injury

There is a reason that some choose to work the back and the ab muscles in the same workout. This is because they work together in the body! The two muscle groups form the majority of what is commonly referred to as your "core". A big cause of back pain is having a weak core. When a person does not have proper core strength proportionate to the rest of their body and its use, injuries are more likely to occur. I've noticed from experience that when I began working my abs more and not just my back, I suffered less back injuries.

An Organic Shield for Your Vital Organs

The ab muscles are sometimes called the stomach muscles because wouldn't you know it they are housed where the stomach is located. In that same area are other critical parts of your body including the small and large intestines, kidneys and liver. If you can manage to strengthen your abdominal muscles your are in essence creating a sort of shield for these organs. You never know what life is going to throw at you. Having some tough abs might even save your life.

Other Benefits

Obviously these aren't the only benefits of strong abs but they are the ones that really stand out to me and have been confirmed through experience. Health professionals have agreed for many years that having a strong core is definitely a plus for your body. There are many different training methods and techniques out there for building those particular muscles. You've just got to get out there and find the ones that work for you.
