Your Swollen Sprained Ankle Treatment Is Urgent!

This is urgent! If your sprained ankle is swollen you need to start immediately on your sprained ankle treatment. I know, you're in pain and the last thing you want to do is be motivate to do something. However, you need to plan for the future. Perhaps the most important part of sprained ankle rehabilitation is the early stages of swollen sprained ankle treatment.

Here's what I mean. Initially, when your ankle is first injured, your body sends excess fluids to the area to protect it. Like a self defence mechanism, the swelling protects the area from further injury. However, later on, that swelling will do you more harm than good and that's why this is so important.

You need to start exercising and massaging the area.

I know, massaging it seems like the last thing you want to do, but really. Many of the more modern swollen sprained ankle treatment specialists are saying that movement and massage are the best thing for your ankle at this stage.

So how do you get started?

Ice for the first 48 hours. Don't touch the ice directly to the skin, only ice for 20 minutes every three hours, and keep it elevated. It's ok to stay off the injured ankle for the time being. After 48 hours, begin by flexing and wiggling your toes. If you can't feel them, it may be broken. If you are able to wiggle them with a bit of pain, good. Keep doing that. These are the baby steps of swollen sprained ankle treatment. If you can wiggle them without pain, stop being a baby and do something harder!

Sorry to sound like that drill sergeant from Full Metal Jacket, but really. If you want to get back on your feet, your main goal now is to get rid of swelling and prevent the formation of scar tissue. Scar tissue is weaker than normal tissue and can lead to re-injury down the road. The fluids causing the swelling is what makes scar tissue. So you need to make use of this time early on, and try to do some flexibility exercises. You don't need a physical therapist to know that if you can't rock your ankle back and forth, there's a problem. Keep tying until you can.

As you progress in your swollen sprained ankle treatment exercise, couple these exercises with light massage. Massage the areas that are painful - they need it most. you don't have to put yourself through excruciating pain, but if it's not painful, it's probably not doing anything useful. You're trying to break down scar tissue!
