There is much fear of bedbugs, yet they can be killed and controlled both safely and cheaply. Bedbugs tend to spread around, so it is important to control the bedbug problem early. Understanding the bedbug will help tremendously in killing and controlling a bedbug problem.
Bedbugs are a very difficult bug to get rid of. They are small, fast, and are very good at hiding. They do not make central hiding places like ants or bees. They can live anywhere.
Bedbugs feed on the blood of humans and animals, but they prefer humans. They do not like to travel in hair, so they tend not to live on pets. They like to hide during the day and feed at night. Bedbugs find their food source by sensing our breathing as we sleep.
Knowing that bedbugs feed on human blood while we sleep, the bedroom is the place to start looking for bedbugs. The bed is the primary home of the bedbug, but searching all around the bed is very important. The mattress is their favorite home, so be sure to get a bedbug proof mattress cover.
Killing the bedbug is very easy, but can often cause much bigger problems. Crushing the bedbug is very easy, but may result in the release of eggs. About 500 bedbugs can be produced from one bedbug egg.
Many sprays are available to kill bedbugs, and many of these sprays claim to be safe for humans and pets. Sprays are called contact killers, as they kill the bugs upon contact. There are problems with the sprays, though. Spraying the bedbug may kill the bedbugs that are hit by the spray, but the bedbugs that are not hit will quickly spread around the room and the home, creating a much bigger problem.
There are poisons that are targeted at bedbugs. The poisons may work in controlling the bedbug problem, but then the bedroom and home become toxic. This would be trading an annoying problem for a very dangerous problem.
My favorite solution to the bedbug problem is using Diatomaceous Earth powder. Such a powder kills the bug slowly by tearing apart its exoskeleton. This slowly dehydrates the bedbug. There are two types of such powder, one is used for cleaning pools and the other is Food Grade. The pool cleaning powder is very toxic, and the Food Grade powder can be consumed by humans and pets. Even though the Food Grade powder is safe to consume, care must be taken to avoid inhaling the powder when spreading around the home.
