Getting Rid Of Bed Bugs: The Game Has Changed!

Bed bugs are small tick-like creatures that feed primarily on human blood. Usually they are not taken very seriously, but that's mainly because they haven't until recently become a serious problem, as they once were back in the 40's prior to the use of DDT.

So, what brought about this strange bed bug 'come-back'? There are two main schools of thought regarding why bed bugs are coming back in great numbers. One of the main reasons is that, ironically, bed bugs are being unwittingly transported into homes and hotels by travellers.

The second possibility is that bed bugs have developed immunity to the older methods of extermination. It was in the 1940's and 1950's that the exterminating of bed bugs began. Remember DDT? That was the chemical used back then to get rid of bed bugs.

During the alte 60's, however, DDT was made illegal due to its harmful effects on both humans and the environment. Subsequently, the new and improved bed bug gradually regained in numbers and by 2007 infestations were being reported on a frequent basis.

So, back in the day DDT was the crucial player in getting rid of bed bugs. However, the banning of DDT has ushered in a new era of bed bug extermination, one which requires greater effort and persistence. Exterminating bed bugs now requires the more thoroughness as bed bugs become cleverer and stronger.

The little critters are excellent hiders, seeking refuge in just about crack and crevice they can find, the tufts of mattresses, underneath rugs and carpets, cracks in the sofa - anywhere secluded. This only adds to the tedium of getting rid of bed bugs. All the possible places a bed bug could live must be searched and turned over before beginning the actual process of exterminating of bed bugs. This is to ensure that there will be no more bed bugs left once the treatment is complete. Prior to the actual process of getting rid of bed bugs, there are certain intermediate steps that should be taken immediately:

All clothing, bedding, and anything else washable must immediately be placed in very hot water to soak for an hour.

Wrap mattresses and unwashable items like soft toys, in plastic and place under direct sunlight.

Vacuum thouroughly, making sure to get into all the little crevices and corners where bed bugs might seek refuge.

Seal any gaps in the furniture, floorboards and cracks where the bed bugs can hide.

Often, the infestation will not be severe enough that calling in of expert exterminators is warranted. With the products available today, it is more than possible to take care of an infestation yourself, which may require a bit of time but will be far less expensive than calling in professionals. But if the infestation is really serious you may want to consider getting a professional in.

Where professionals are used, the treatment process will usually commence with the spraying of some form of insecticide. There are various difference types of spray used for different kind of materials such as bedding and carpeting. A lot of the chemicals used these days have no odour and won't damage or leave residue on the items that are sprayed.

Getting rid of bed bugs can be tedious and requires effort and persistence. These cunning bugs live in nooks and crannies that can be hard to reach, even when using professional equipment. It doesn't help that bed bugs can also last up to several months without food. By making sure that all the areas have been treated properly, the exterminating of bed bugs will be more effective.

After getting rid of bed bugs through spraying of insecticides, the next process is to use insecticide dust. The powder-based insecticide is a step that really can't be missed because it reaches those areas that the liquid spray couldn't get to.

The entire process of getting rid of bed bugs can last three days to weeks, depending on the serious of the infestation. Back in the 40's and 50's, getting rid of bed bugs was actually quite a bit quicker - the experts would come in with a batch of DDT and just nuke the place. But now the process is more targeted, meaning slower but thorough.
