If you are an owner of a pet, I'm sure you've dealt with fleas on at least one occasion with your pets. We know fleas bite our pets, but, do fleas bite people? They will bite people if they don't have a better host, preferably a cat, dog, kitten or puppy to feast upon.
Whether you have pets or not, you can have fleas in your home. If it's a new home or apartment, the previous owners or renters may have had a pet with fleas. The flea eggs can stay dormant, (sleeping until a host signals them that there is food for them, blood to eat), for a year or more. They are very resilient critters for sure!
The fleas will use you for a meal if they don't have anything better to eat, meaning a pet, so you should take care of the problem immediately. If you follow some simple steps and stay ahead of the fleas life cycle you can get rid of all the fleas within a month.
If you do have pets you will need to treat them for fleas. There are many different treatments out there for you to choose from but only applying a topical flea treatment after a flea bath will not kill all the fleas in your home. Your pet should be bathed and flea combed at least once a week. There are ways to do this without drying out their skin or causing them more irritation. You can find a link at the bottom of the page for more information on treating fleas on your pets.
After you've treated your pets, you will need to treat your home or apartment for fleas as well. Any areas that your pet likes to spend time, if you have a pet, are all places to give a little bit more attention in the flea removal process. Again just like with your pets there are different ways you can approach this, with or without chemicals. This is something you need to decide, if you have children or are pregnant, I would recommend using the natural route without chemicals. Both with or without chemicals can be extremely effective as long as you take the time to do it right.
If you have a house with a backyard, you will want to treat the outside of your home as well for the fleas. If you don't have any pets but have a backyard, the fleas probably came from there. If your neighbours have pets that are outside, it may be them bringing the fleas into your yard. Either way you will need to treat the outside for complete flea control!
If you treat your pets fleas, the inside of your home or apartment along with the outside of your home for fleas, you will see a significant difference in the flea population in your home within a week. Make sure to continue your flea treatments for a at least a month, this is about how long a fleas life cycle lasts.
