So here you are one day at home and you start to think about getting a pet. You ask yourself, " What kind of pet do I want." That will be the first question you ask yourself. Do I want to get a pet because I am lonely, the kids want one, should it be a dog or a cat or even a bird. Should it have long hair or short hair, big or small. So many questions.
Yes, there are a lot of questions, but questions that need to be answered before you get a pet. Pets end up in shelters because people do not ask these questions before they get their pet. Some of the reasons pets end up in shelters is because of the cost ( food, vet ), no time to spend with the pet, it was a gift or it got bigger then it should have.
Each pet is different in its own way, just like a human. No two dogs are the same, no two cats are the same. Birds are different then a horse. Certain pets will require more care then others.
Do you live in an apartment or out in the country with lots of land. That will make a big difference on the type of pet you should get. A dog needs room to run and a place to do their thing outside. Some dogs need to be exercised in running so they stay in shape. The hamster will work out great in an apartment and a bird would too.
Having a pet is great, but having to give it up can and will break your heart. Pets will be very expensive. The cost of food, shots, vet bills, leashes and don't forget the toys. Most people do not realize how much a pet will cost until they get the pet. Then after a while, they need to make the decision whether to keep the pet or give it up for adoption. A very hard thing to do if you have kids.
There is a great deal of responsibility that comes in owning a pet. It is a family member and will be treated like one. It is not a game that you put in the closet when your done. They need daily care, walks and providing affection every day.
The last thing you need to decide is whether you want a younger pet or an older pet. There are advantages to both. Older ones will be trained all ready but will have some of the problems that come with older pets. Younger ones need to be trained to do everything you want your pet to do. Younger pets like to get into mischief and like to chew on things.
Remember, asking questions will help you in making the right choice and will not be taken lightly.
I agree, Great article, Dan! Our cockatiels provide so much relaxation and laughter for us. Without the research or exposure we would never have known the joy of these little cartoon characters with "Attitude". Or the sadness of losing them as a family member... They live to be 15 to 25 years old. That leaves a huge gap when they are gone.
Thank you William. I agree. A pet will make you laugh and give you hours of enjoyment.
Great article, I really believe if you want to find someone to love, care for, and get a load of laughs from, then get a pet. thank you
