What is this world coming to when we have to give our pet drugs to calm them down? Is it a case of that we do not know to deal with them or are we to lazy to deal with them. We have to remember that we got our pet to calm us down, not the other way.
There are some drugs we need to give our pets like rabbie shots, distemper shots and maybe a few other ones. But do we need to give them Prozac, Anipryl and Zoloft just to name a few. We know what it can do to humans and some were pulled off the shelves because of the side affects. When was the last time your pet told you of the side affects they were having from taking these drugs. I know for a fact that my pet never said a word to me.
Don't get me wrong, our pets can also suffer from things like anxiety, depression and compulsive disorders. Last year Americans spent almost $ 7 billion, ( yes, I said $ 7 billion ), dollars on drugs for our pets. That is up 35 percent in the last four years. Is that dramatic increase due to the manufactures pushing it up or the doctors pushing it up. Or is it both. We all know why drugs are so high for humans, so are the companies and the doctors now going after our pets to make the big money.
A veterinary version of a psychiatrist and a leading advocate of mind altering drugs, Dr. Nicholas Dodman, has treated almost everything you can thing of with prescription drugs for animals. He states that there is absolutely no doubt that drugs that were used on humans can and do work on our pets.
I asked myself, when was the last time they used our pets to test out new drugs. The last time I heard, they use rats because rats closely resemble the human body. Or is it against the law to our pets as test animals. Would we rather pump drugs into our pets to calm them down or just spend some quality time with them. Remember that we got our pet to calm us down, not the other way around.
We need to think long and hard about what we think is the best thing for our pets. Do we want to put them on drugs for the rest of there lives or do we want to teach them and spend quality time with them to calm them down. Drugs are very expensive and if you start your pet on drugs, you need to continue. You can not just get up and quit when you don't have the money to by the drugs. That would do more harm then good. If you need to get drugs to save your pet, by all means, do it. But if not, think long and hard before you get your pet hooked on drugs.
Thank you Dale, I am not real smart but like to think that I have a lot of common sense.
Good morning Bill, thank you. After I did some research and found that info, I was shocked at what I found. It is crazy, but pet owner's love their pets and will do anything to keep them around for as long as they can.
