Protect Your Pet From Injury During the Holidays

Holiday time is a time of joy. We celebrate with our families, decorate the home and yard, and exchange gifts. We get together with those we may not see often throughout the year and indulge in holiday goodies and treats. While it is a time of joy and celebration for us, it can be a cause of worry for our pets. Let's look at some of the ways we can protect our pets from injury during the holiday.

1. Keep your pets away from the Christmas tree and forego the tinsel. Many hidden dangers lurk around the tree, including the tempting water reservoir at the base which can be toxic, tinsel just waiting to be ingested and wrap itself around intestines, and the want to climb, which can result in the tree toppling over on your pet. Anchoring the tree and skipping the tinsel will help keep your pet safe.

2. Put holiday plants up out of reach. Many seasonal plants such as poinsettia, holly, mistletoe and lilies can be particularly toxic if ingested.

3. Roaring fires and lit candles can be a burn hazard. Be sure to use a proper fireplace screen and place lit candles up high to prevent accidental burning.

4. Provide your pet with a quiet area to go when company is over. Extra guests mean extra noise and if any of those are small children they may find your pet too cute to resist. Added noise and being pursued can be extremely upsetting for most pets and may cause anxiety and stomach issues. A little planning ahead to provide your pet a quiet spot with food, water and a soft spot to curl up will go a long way in ensuring the safety and health of your pet.

5. Keep holiday goodies up high. A box of chocolates or a tray of cookies may look inviting on a coffee table, but can be deadly to your pet. Only place food out when you will be there to keep a constant watch on your pets, or when they will be away in their quiet spot.

6. Be sure to stick to your regular schedule. It can be very upsetting to your pet if they don't keep to their regular feeding and walking times, and stomach upset and illness can occur.

Your pets won't understand the extra hustle and bustle at this time of year. Pay extra attention to the changes you are making in your home and your routine and how they may affect your furry friends and ensure they also have a safe and happy holiday season.

Thanks Kyle. Yes it is true, that we all tend to forget our pets throughout the holiday crowds and celebration. This is a reminder for all of us at the right time!
