Rabbit In the Home - How to Care for An Indoor Rabbit

It is not unheard of these days for people to keep rabbits inside the house. If you've had the pleasure of keeping a rabbit inside your home, then you know what I'm talking about. They make wonderful pets, so of course you want your pet rabbit around you a lot.

Gone are the days when rabbits are contained in solitary confinement in a measly hutch outside. Rabbits are social animals. They need a rabbit companion, or that of another animal, or human. Keeping a pet rabbit in the house provides you with reassurance that your beloved pet is safe from predators, and it gives your pet rabbit the happiness of being given attention.

If you're worried about the smell a rabbit leaves behind, you should know that rabbits don't have an odor. They don't have sweat glands. It is their urine that is strong from the ammonia content. However, if you clean up after your rabbit, just like you would have to with any other pet, then this isn't going to be a problem.

By nature, rabbits are naturally chewy. This is because their teeth grow for life, so they have to wear their teeth down. Many love wires and will happily chew on them. As you can imagine, this isn't the best hobby for them to have. You can curb their chewing behavior, by providing them with the appropriate food and chew toys.

It is important to note that rabbits in the house require at least couple of hours exercise on a daily basis. They are most active at dawn and dusk. Thus, perfect for those who keep the 9 to 5 routine. You can supervise the rabbit out before work, and then in the evening when you are back home. You can even buy a rabbit leash for the outdoors.

It's important for rabbits in the house to be given a safe area to jump around in. An area free from screaming children, or dangerous pets, or poisonous plants, those wires, and whatever else might interfere with your rabbit's safety.

If you're worried about the rabbit using your floors as a toilet, do know that they can be litter box trained. Yes, you heard right! Some are better at using their litter box than others. But it definitely helps to get your pet "fixed", thereby getting rid of the natural marking behavior.

It is okay to keep your pet rabbit in a cage, but just be sure it's roomy enough and the rabbit still gets its exercise. It's best to get a cage with a front door, so your pet can go in and out of the cage on it's own accord. You could also allow a caged in running area to surround the cage, or the rabbit can have free range of a room, or two. Some even allow most of their home.

Rabbits make lovable pets and should be treated the same way as a pet dog or cat. You wouldn't cage a dog or cat in your backyard, so why would you do that to a rabbit? Keeping a rabbit in the home is possible. You just have to understand their behavior and also learn how to litter train rabbit.
