There are some important points that need to be considered before you actually start raising chickens. One major point is, are you allowed to raise chickens in your neighborhood and the next point is what will your neighbors think? Some of you may not really care what the neighbors think. For those of you who do; it might be a good idea to take in some considerations before you start to build your simple chicken coop.
Neighborhood permission
As mentioned, you will need to find out if your neighborhood allows holding chickens. There may even be a restriction on the amount you can have. Along with the zoning rules you may find certain restrictions or rules to follow. If you are allowed to have chickens then there is not much your neighbor can do to stop you.
Avoid annoyance
The quality oflife is much better if you live in a respectful and helpful neighborhood. Some of your neighbors may not like the idea that you will be raising chickens. Chickens are not very quiet animals and they make big messes and can cause smells. This is what your neighbor is probably worried about. Try to speak to them in advance, assuring them that they will not notice any of the above.
Keep noise down
How can you keep chickens quiet? This sounds really funny, but you can keep the noise down somewhat. Try to build your simple chicken coop in an area that is away from your neighbor. Also putting your chickens in early enough will keep the noise down. In cold weather you can even insulate your coop which is great for warmth as well as noise.
Keep clean
Bad odors are worse than noise. This can be a major problem in the neighborhood. Your neighbors will retaliate and won’t put up with it. This will definitely cause conflict between you and the neighbors.
It is to your own interest to keep your chicken coop as well as the area where your chickens run free clean. Sometimes people who have chickens don’t notice the smell anymore. They become used to it. For others it is a beastly, horrible smell. Try to keep this in mind.
Building your own simple chicken coop and raising chickens is really a wonderful experience not only for the fresh eggs and meat but to live a healthy, self-sustainable life style. Keep your neighbors in mind when considering this project and you will be able to enjoy raising chickens.
