Sri Aurobindo is a great philosopher and yogi of modern India. His philosophy is almost similar to Original Vedanta with new trends. Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy is integral non-dualism or synthetic philosophy. His philosophy is negation of two negations of Idealism and Materialism. i.e. spirit and matter.
The great yogi states that evolution is not only of physical forms but also evolution of consciousness. Higher consciousness results in the future evolution of man in to superman.
Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy of evolution of consciousness as the true meaning of the world movement has to be accepted for many reasons by the higher mind of humanity. Spiritual movements are no longer other worldly in their orientation. Sri Aurobindo’s vision and content of Life Divine on Earth is no longer a dream but a future reality. The Gospel of perfect man in perfect society is no longer regarded as a chimera or a dream.
Yoga self-determined, self-directed movement towards this life of the divine is the supreme prerogative of man. Yoga is the psychological discipline by means of which man crosses the frontiers of his surface consciousness enters the realm of his inner being which opens to the divine for its descent. Therefore the individual must prepare a leap beyond the mind.
The preparation for this leap is called Integral Yoga. It is an elaborate discipline capable of transforming one’s state of mind and one’s life. So, in this context philosophy joins hands with yoga. What philosophy establishes theoretically necessity, we can practically realize through yoga. It teaches us to open all the doors of our body, life, soul and mind to the new light that is coming from above. The distinctive elements of Jnana yoga (Knowledge), Bhakti yoga (Devotion) and Karma yoga (Work) are woven into the texture of Integral yoga thus constituting the basis of its synthetic philosophy.
The double liberation (soul and nature), the triple transformation (psychic, spiritual and higher mental) and four fold perfection (body, prana, heart and intellect) are the special features of Sri Aurobindo’s yoga. Liberation, transformation and perfection contain revolutionary departures from the traditional paths of yoga and the original contribution of Sri Aurobindo to the spiritual achievements of humanity. They are meant to bring into focus the essential elements of the Divine Life which according to Sri Aurobindo is the ultimate destiny of the evolving being of man and evolution of consciousness by stages.
Sri Aurobindo states “It has not been found in experience whatever might have once been hoped that education and intellectual training by itself can change man.” The yoga practice alone can achieve. All would be changed the Earth the body, death itself. The transformation of man must spring from an inner source. This is Sri Aurobindo’s teaching and method of practice. He has not developed any new religion. He did not try to amalgamate the older religions into a new religion because it will be a deviation from his purpose.
The one aim of his yoga is an inner self development by which each one who follows it can in time discover the oneself in all and evolves a higher consciousness that can transform and change the human nature for good.
"All life is yoga." -Sri Aurobindo
While studying philosophy in a formal academic atmosphere I did hear of Sri Aurobindo but did not read any of his work directly. I appreciate that you bothered to write something about this man and his work. In truth I found a significant typo in one of your sentences: 3rd sentence of your 5th paragraph. Thanks again.
Thank you for this article. Because I don't know much about this it was certainly interesting and I enjoyed it very much.
