Four Questions to Ask Yourself Before Buying A Digital Camera

Shopping for a new digital camera can be overwhelming. As with other forms of technology, cameras evolve quickly and more and more terms are being used to describe the plethora of features that today's sophisticated digital cameras have. Before getting caught up in the hype about the latest features, take a moment to ask yourself these four questions so you'll be sure to buy a digital camera that's right for you:

1. What will I primarily use my digital camera for? Answering this question will help you determine which type of digital camera is most appropriate for you (point and shoot versus SLR) as well as which model within your chosen category. While it’s wise to think of your camera as a long term investment, don’t overshoot and buy one that’s so fancy it intimidates you and thwarts your efforts to become a digital photographer. It’s okay to buy a digital camera that stretches you a bit so that you learn more about digital photography but don’t go overboard.

2. What equipment/accessories does the digital camera require? Thinking ahead about which type of memory cards, batteries, carrying case, etc., you’ll have to purchase for your new camera will give you a firm grasp of the total investment that you’re making and avoid putting you in a situation where you buy a cheap camera that costs more in the end because of all the expensive equipment it requires.

3. What do the reviews say? No digital camera is 100% perfect but some are better than others for the purpose that you will use your digital camera for. So take the time to do a bit of research and find out what other folks, especially those whose experience level is similar to yours, say about the digital camera that you’re looking to buy.

4. How much money am I willing to spend? After determining your preferred type of digital camera and an ideal list of features, use your budget to narrow down the selection of digital cameras that you could buy. And it’s not unheard of for camera shops to negotiate on price, so setting a budget may even help you negotiate for a camera with more features than you initially thought you could afford.

Before you go out and buy a digital camera just because it has the highest number of mexapixels or largest memory capacity, stop and ask yourself these questions. Not only will you gain confidence that you're buying the right camera for you, you'll also be glad to avoid the common mistake of paying for expensive digital camera features that you never use.
