Grow Your Photography Blog In 2012

Who wouldn't like more traffic to their blog or website? With a solid strategy and a little elbow grease, you can get those traffic numbers to take off in 2012. I was part of a team that took a brand new blog to an Alexa ranking of 86k in under three months. Now THAT is a lot of traffic! How did we do it? I'm glad you asked.

Post Post Post

One of the keys to generating traffic is to give people a reason to return to your blog. If you only post twice a month, people will rarely visit. However, if you keep a steady stream of fresh content flowing, they will return frequently and drive up your traffic numbers. Our team posted almost 150 posts in an 11 week period. You don't need that much - but certainly two a week is reasonable.

It also needs to be QUALITY content. We would save each post as a draft and let a teammate proofread it before publishing. Find a friend or fellow blogger who will help you with this and proof each other's posts before publishing. You will locate lots of typos and increase the quality of your posts. Nobody likes boring, sloppy content - so make sure it is top-notch.

Guest Posting

This has always been one of the top traffic strategies out there. Find some blogs in your niche and ask if you can guest post. It is one of the best ways out there to find targeted readers for your blog. Make sure it is an engaging article. Don't be worried about rejection. If a blogger won't let you guest post, just move on to the next one. There are PLENTY of blogs out there - so don't waste too much time on any particular one.

Social Media

Twitter and Facebook can be HUGE traffic sources- so use them to your advantage. You don't want to over-do it, but be sure to use them to notify people of your new posts. When you do a guest post- promote that as well. Remember, we aren't looking for one big source of traffic, but rather several small sources of traffic. It is much easier and much more efficient to do it that way. Just make sure you have a smart social media plan in place.

The Secret

So what is the secret to a more web traffic? Unfortunately, it isn't really a secret at all - it is hard work. If you set aside the time and do the work, results will follow. I've seen from my own photography blog how these techniques can work. If you give them a try, your 2012 will be one of the busiest years you've ever had! Good luck!

Hi Larry, I enjoyed your article. A lot of photographers struggle to get business, and I think that a blog is a great way to reach out to prospective clients. I also liked your idea of getting a guest writer to post for your blog. How would you go about getting someone to do that for you?

Hi Paul- thanks for the comment! Just visit a bunch of photography blogs. Leave comments on a few of their posts and get a feeling for the blogger's style. When you find some you like, email them and ask if they would guest post on your blog. You will find that your success rate is a lot higher when you deal with a blog that is close to yours in page rank-at least, that has been my experience. Good luck!
