There are many tools you can use when you would like to do trick photography, some of these tools will include a tripod stand, photo editing software and special lenses. These are all dependent on the type of image you want to achieve.
Below are some popular photography tricks you can try out:
HDR Photography
HDR (High Dynamic High Range photography) is a technique that layers multiple photos into a single image. In turn this increases the image’s dynamic range, this will allow one to increase the visibility of highlights and shadows in your photo. Due to limit of information that D SLR cameras can record one needs to “bracket” (capture multiple photos of the same subject that are varying in brightness) and then layer them using digital editing software like Adobe Photoshop, the software will help you create highly dynamic photos.
Forced Perspective
This is an awesome technique that one should master because you can do it without any editing. All you need to do is set your camera to the smallest aperture possible and position your camera in front of your subject in such a way so that it appears to interact with something behind them note that everything should be in focus.
Upside-down Reflections
This is another classic from the popular photography tricks arsenal which always creates interest. If you ever come across a body of water invert your camera and zoom in and focus on the reflection so that you achieve a close crop. You should want the focal point on the reflection not the water. The result is a surreal effect.
Infrared Photography
This technique uses a digital sensor that has been modified to use the infrared color spectrum to give a photo false color or make it black and white. For example an image will have a sky that is black and a tree that is white.
Rear Curtain Flash Synchronization to Produce Light Trails
This is another photography technique that can be used to produce an impression of movement in a photo. The effect seems complicated to create especially if a camera's flash settings can’t be adjusted. Basically all that needs to be done both flashes need to be synchronized.
These are to name just a few of the many popular photography tricks that one can use to create interest and visually pleasing and appealing photos. Other tricks include light painting, levitation, and miniature tilt shift photography.
Create Your Own
The most important part of trick photography is creativity! If you learn the right techniques and basic tricks, who knows what you'll be able to think of by yourself!
BTW, Dom. Any ideas for getting good moon shots? Mine, so far, have been overexposed. I haven't had a lot of time to try manual settings.
Thanks for the ideas, Dom. I am still trying to get my Lumix G5 to do infrared. I see that you can "convert" my camera by replacing the mirror with glass for IFR photography. I am still plugging away with an infrared filter so we will see. Regards
