Posing for modeling needs the model to have poise. Sometimes in the search for poise a model will fall into the trap of “over posing”. Posing for modeling just requires the model to look as natural as possible. In the film industry, the best actors are those who are as natural as their character demands. The same can be said about posing for modeling.
In order to get the feel of this, a model should observe other people as they go about their daily lives. Look at how someone will brush the hair off their face, the spring in their step as they walk. Take note of how people look when they are pocketing their hands, or how they lean against a guard rail. You should observe how men and women carry their bodies as they do a variety of things. How do they look when they are communicating angrily, excitedly or quiet? People who stand out from the crowd are perhaps the best people for a model to observe so that they know about how to pose naturally.
Posing for modeling also requires that the model be versatile. It’s not all about walking down the catwalk. If you are asked to pose as a soldier for an advertisement then you must be able to pull this off well. If you are asked to be a doting mother cuddling her child whilst sleeping, you must be able to bring out the love that the mother has for the child. Posing for modeling can be demanding in terms of preparation but it will reward you by having your photos look superb.
The mirror is a model's best friend, especially when it comes to practicing poses. You should practice various poses in front of the mirror and truthfully judge whether you are able to pull it off or not. Learn to adjust your poses until you can easily move from one to the next without making many adjustments. Some camera shoots can really be fast, with the photographer barking orders on what mood he/she wants and you should be able to seamlessly shift from one to the other.
The photographer on the other hand should be able to look at the models features and ascertain what kind of poses will bring out the best shots. This understanding between the model and the photographer is very important in order to get the best shots. The photographer tells the model which pose to take and the model seamlessly shifts into perfect position.
Learning new and interesting posing for modeling can help when it comes to looking natural in front of the camera.
Taking the time to research and discover new modeling poses will leave you with a new level of confidence, one in which your certain you can achieve the desired outcome.
