Purchasing The First Additional Lens For Your Nikon Digital Camera

When you purchased your new digital SLR camera, chances are that you received a standard kit lens as part of the purchase. Where Nikon digital SLR's are concerned, this lens is typically the Nikon 18-55mm lens. This is a great little lens--super sharp, versatile, and comes with auto focus (AF), and vibration reduction (VR) built in. Inevitably however, the day comes when you want a lens that does more. A lens that has the ability to capture subjects that are much farther away from where you're standing and bring these objects into your photo as if you are right in the middle of the "action". There are so many lenses available, both by Nikon and by third party manufacturers, that your head could spin just considering all the possibilities. For the sake of brevity, let's focus on two--both made by Nikon. The 55-200mm Nikon lens and the 18-200mm Nikon lens.

FOCAL LENGTH

The "mm" designation on your lens (35mm, 50mm, 18-55mm, etc.) is a measure of the lens' focal length. In short, the lower the number, the smaller the focal length, the wider the angle your lens uses. Higher mm numbers have a higher focal range. These lenses are used to make far away subjects appear closer to the photographer, or, at certain focal lengths, to zoom in and produce a "tight" shot on a subject, say as in a portrait shot. Chances are, you have the 18-55mm lens that came with your camera. If that is the case, the 55-200mm Nikon lens provides a lens that complements your original lens, continuing in focal length from 55mm upwards to 200mm.

COMPARISON

Both lenses in question, the Nikon 55-200mm lens (actual designation: Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF- S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens) and the Nikon 18-200mm lens (actual designation: Nikon 18-200mm f3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR II Nikkor Telephoto Zoom Lens) come with auto focus (AF), a feature that comes in handy for many, but not all, of the photos that you will take. The AF in the 55-200mm lens is turned on and off by a button, while the AF on the 18-200mm camera can be over-ridden simply by turning the focus ring on the lens. Both also come with vibration reduction (VR), a handy feature which greatly reduces the effects of a jiggly camera. Both are quality lenses for the money.

Take note of the "f" value in the actual designations of each lens. The 55-200mm lens has an f value of 4 to 5.6, while the 18-200 mm lens has an f value of 3.5 to 5.6. "F" is a description of the size of the aperture hole, which allows light into your camera. Lower numbers equal a larger aperture opening, allowing more light to be let into your camera (think of the pupil of an eye opening and closing). The lower number (3.5) possessed by the 18-200mm lens means a larger possible aperture opening, which allows more light into the camera which provides the photographer with a measure of increased flexibility when taking photos. In short, the lower the number, the better, and the 18-200mm lens is superior in this regard.

Probably the biggest difference between the two lenses is the price. The 55-200mm lens can be found for just under $200. The 18-200mm lens is roughly four times that. This, of course, is a significant difference. You could, of course, purchase the 18-200mm lens and sell off the original lens that came with the camera, since the 18-200mm lens takes in the entire focal length of the other two lenses combined. You won't receive much in return, but you will be able to use one lens versus two, thereby saving you from lugging around the weight of an extra lens, and ensuring that you don't miss a photo because you have the wrong lens on your camera at the time.

CONCLUSION

As discussed at Nikon Digital Users, you can't go wrong with either lens. If you're new to digital photography, or if you're on a budget (or both), go with the 55-200mm Nikon lens. It's a great lens for the price and will allow you to take great pictures even at distances. If money is less of an object, by all means, purchase the 18-200mm Nikon lens. Its increased flexibility and high quality will serve you well for years to come.
