Wedding Photography Guide For Beginners

In this wedding photography guide for beginners, I'll offer tips and suggestions for the new photographer. Whether your a pro thinking of adding weddings to your list of services, or a newbie, photographing a wedding for a friend, keep these following tips in mind.

Wedding Photography Guide - Tip #1 Prepare the Client

Being able to capture great wedding images requires a partnership between the photographer and his or her client. Your bride and groom should be made aware of what you need in order to produce these great images. Mainly time and their cooperation to adhere to a schedule. Talk to your couple and explain how long you need for the formal photographs. Ask them to inform their wedding party and family of when and where they are needed for photos. I'll go over this with my couple in our first meeting and in the pre-wedding consultation about two weeks before the wedding.

Wedding Photography Guide - Tip #2 Take an Assistant

If you are the lead or sole photographer, I recommend hiring an assistant. Not a second shooter but someone who is just there to assist you. They carry your bag, hand you lenses and keep and eye on the photography checklist - basically free you up to shoot. I've had wonderful assistants that will have the lens I want in hand before I even ask for it - we're like an old married couple! It can also be invaluable to have an extra set of eyes with you. Someone to keep an eye on what's going on behind you...effectively giving you eyes in the back of your head! Once you work with an assistant, you'll never go back to shooting alone.

Wedding Photography Guide - Tip #3 Use a Photography Checklist

I have all my couples fill out a wedding photography check list. This list has all the standard wedding photographs broken down by formals, ceremony and reception. I encourage my clients to check off everything and anything they want. I also have a little disclaimer at the bottom that states this list is not a guarantee every item checked will be captured. If there is a photograph the bride wants that is not on the list, I encourage her to right it in. The more I know ahead of time the better!

When photographing your next wedding or your first wedding, consider the tips in this wedding photography guide. The name of the games with weddings is preparation, both with you and your client. Be as prepared as you possibly can be.
