Wedding Photography Posing Guide - The Wedding Party, Part 1 I love photographing the wedding party because it is another opportunity for creativity and fun. Below, I offer some tips for preparation and different poses.

Wedding Photography Posing Guide - Tip #1 - Pre-wedding Consultation.

In my pre-wedding consultation with the bride and groom, we talk a little about their wedding party so I can gauge what type of group I'll be working with. Occasionally, the friends in the wedding party have come from different parts of the couple's life and therefore, don't know each other very well or at all. This type of situation may present a less playful group which is fine. More often than not, the bride and groom tell me the bridal party not only get along, they may be a little boisterous. I love this type of group because they tend to be more open to fun ideas and you can come away with some really great shots. The members of the wedding party are the people that, outside of family, are the most important to the bride and groom. I like to be able to showcase that relationship and the traditional wedding party pose doesn't do that.

Wedding Photography Posing Guide - Tip #2 - Variety

Even though I prefer the fun shots, I always do the standard, traditional wedding party pose - girls on one side, guys on the other, bride and groom in the middle. But I do it and get it out of the way so we can have fun. I build on this pose, working up to the more adventurous poses. So next, I'll pair up the bridesmaids and groomsmen. Have them stand on either side of the couple but in casual stance. Girls link arms with the guys or drape an arm over the guys' shoulder. Guys have their hands in their pants pockets or arms crossed. I encourage everyone to stand naturally - that is shifting their weight to one hip or the other. Note: A more flattering pose for women is to shift their weight to the back hip - the one away from the camera. This makes a slight bend in the front leg, which creates a beautiful line. So we do one shot here and then I ask the bride and groom to kiss while the wedding party looks at the couple and throws up their arms cheering.

Wedding Photography Posing Guide - Tip #3 - Let's get adventurous!

For the more adventurous group I suggest a jumping shot. On the count of three, every jumps up in the air, arms raised. This can make for some really fun shots. We typically do the jump three times to make sure I come away with a great shot. Make sure your group is not standing too close to one another or you risk one persons arm blocking the face of the person next to them. Another fun wedding party pose is the group hug. O.K., they are not really hugging but I have some of them crouch low in front, others behind, arms around and everyone leans in toward center. Keep an eye on the group as they are getting into and out of these poses. Sometimes you can catch great candid, playful moments when they are not looking at the camera.

Keep in mind when you suggest some of these more adventurous poses that the group may not be receptive. You can tell within about 2 seconds of suggesting a pose whether the group is up for it. If not, I quickly move on to suggest something else so no one is uncomfortable. Posing of the wedding party can produce some really fun shots for the bridal album. It is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the relationship of these close friendships.
