4 Kinds Of Physical Therapy You Can Consider For A Broken Arm

There are three bones in the human arm and include the ulna, radius, and humerus. If any one of these are fractured or broken due to an accident or trauma, a patient is said to have a broken arm. The cause of this condition may be a fall or when you are attempting to break your fall by sticking out the arm. You will recover from this condition, no doubt, but the time of recovery may vary from a few weeks to more than a month. The healing time depends on the nature of the fracture and the specific injury location.

To help you go back to your previous condition, your doctor will suggest some physical therapy techniques. In this article, we are going to walk you through three of these methods.

1. Flexibility Training

Under flexibility training, a variety of motion exercises would be recommended so that you are able to move your arm with ease. Initially, the exercises may be a little painful because your broken arm has been in a cast for many weeks.

The exercises include:

  • Turning your hand up and down but keeping your elbow still.
  • Few exercises to restore motion in the shoulder joint.
  • Exercises to restore movement to a patient’s elbow joint

2. Strength Training

When it comes to strength training, it includes movements meant to reinstate muscular strength to a patient’s arm.

The range of motions includes:

  • External and internal rotation to reinstate strength to the shoulder joint.
  • Straightening and bending your arm.
  • These exercises should be performed only after consulting with your physical therapist. They should be done as advised by a specialist so that you recover quickly.

3. Sports Specific Treatment

Are you an athlete and suffering due to a fractured arm? If yes, your doctor will recommend some therapies so that you are able to return to the playground as soon as possible.

Depending on the kind of sport you are pursuing and the nature of the injury, the exercises include:

  • Throwing motions.
  • Catching exercises.
  • Exercises to assist you in restoring eye-hand coordination

4. Occupational Treatment

Based on the nature of your job, treatment for a broken arm includes activities meant to help you return to work.

The activities include:

  • Manual manipulation of small parts.
  • Exercises to strengthen particular muscles that a person uses at the workplace.
  • Some lifting exercises that the imitate motions made during a normal work day.

So, after you have fractured your arm, a professional specializing in physical therapy would see you in the hospital. Have a word with him and ask a lot of questions. You can ask questions like how effective will be the treatment, how soon you will be able to return to normal activity, whether the therapies would be painful or not etc.

When your arm is broken, your doctor will ask you to keep your affected arm in a sling to facilitate healing. When a professional physical therapist visits you in the hospital, he would teach you how to apply and remove the sling without hurting yourself.
