Help Veterans In Crisis - Treat Ptsd

U.S. Service personnel are committing suicide at an alarming rate of 23 each day. Those suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) make up most of these cases. The Pentagon has been reluctant to make available a treatment that has many supporters. That treatment is hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT, and it should be made available to America's wounded warriors.

HBOT is the process of breating pure oxygen in a pressurized room. It has been used successfully to treat scuba divers suffering from decompression. It can also stimulate the healing of stubborn wounds. When the highly oxygenated blood travels through the body, it stimulates the production of growth factors and accelerates healing in the body. It has been successful in bringing veterans back from a brain injury.

The treatment is usually given for one hour, and the patient typically needs between 40 to 80 sessions. Those who work with this process say it is a very effective process for restoring memory, and bringing people back to themselves from their PTSD condition.

Resistance in the Department of Defense and the Veterans Administration is based on the cost of the program, and the apparent lack of hard evidence that the treatment actually works in a high percentage of cases. Some officials criticize the HBOT studies as lacking control groups. They say control groups are needed in order to rule out the possibility that the improvement is just perceived, and is not real.

The Defense Department is strapped for cash, and they are looking for ways to lower the cost of PTSD, not for ways to pay out more. That is why they are kept on drugs, where they do not improve their condition.

Hope is on the way for the wounded warriors who suffer from PTSD. The U.S. House of Representatives has introduced H.R. 1938 to assure access to HBOT to all military personnel once they receive a doctor's prescription. This bill should be passed. It is a moral issue. Our men and women have suffered to keep our good life intact. They need this treatment that we have the ability to give. Let them have it and get well.

Here is an excerpt from the Mayo Clinic's web site: "Your body's tissues need an adequate supply of oxygen to function. When tissue is injured, it requires even more oxygen to survive. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry. An increase in blood oxygen temporarily restores normal levels of blood gases and tissue function to promote healing and fight infection."
