How to Choose A Rollator Walker

Daily walking is an important activity to staying healthy. A rollator walker is a piece of medical equipment that aids a person with their walking. It stabilizes balance, helps to bear your weight, prevents falls and increases your endurance. Seek advice from your doctor or physical therapist to see if a rollator walker would be of benefit to you. Ask them which type and style would best fit your needs.

Styles of Rollator Walkers

Not all walkers are the same. Some styles are only for indoor use, while others can handle maneuvering through the grass. The rollator walker has four legs with wheels. It usually comes with a seat to sit on and sometimes has a basket attached for carrying objects. It folds easily and can fit in the trunk of a car.

Select the Correct Size

Read the specifications on the walker. Be sure that you meet the weight requirements. The standard walkers usually can handle about 300 pounds. The height of the seat is also important. Sit on the seat of the walker and check if you feel comfortable and that your feet touch the ground. Check if the seat is adjustable. Consider the size of the living space that the walker will need to maneuver.

Take a Test Drive

Visit a medical supply store and test drive a rollator walker. Make sure that you can handle the brakes and that it feels comfortable. The braking system may be too hard to work if your hands are weak. You can also ask your neighbors or friends if they have one that you can test drive.

Measure the Rollator Walker

Wear a pair of good walking shoes that you use daily. Step inside the walker with your arms straight and with hands down at your side. The hand grips of the walker should be at the same height with the crease of your wrist. If needed adjust the height of the handles. Your elbows should be at a 15 degree angle when gripping the handles of the walker. Allow enough room to stand comfortably inside the walker frame while walking. Walk with a straight body and not bent over.

Choose a Color

Choosing a color for your walker can make it more personal. The standard colors are blue, burgundy, black and pink. Many people like to personalize their walkers by adding stickers, decorations, a flag or a designer walker bag.

Shop for the Best Price

Make a list of your favorite styles and manufacturers. Compare prices online and at a local store. Find out the specs on a walker before ordering. Many online stores offer lower prices than a retail store. Check with your insurance company for medical equipment coverage.
