It is really important for physical therapists to recognize the importance of movement system as the core physical therapy practice, education and most importantly research. Therefore, it is really important for you, as a physical therapist, to know the background and remain up-to-date about the profession. The American Physical Therapist Association or APTA described the profession to transform the society by optimizing movement to improve human experience. The movement system is meant to serve as a combining term for a profession that some people within it considered as fragmented one – by practice setting, (private practice, hospital, home health, academia, and so forth), patient population (pediatric, geriatric, and others), and even body part or function (musculoskeletal, pulmonary, cardiovascular, neuromuscular, and integumentary).

Physical Therapist and Their Work

Practice of Physical Therapists and the Human Movement System are both intertwined. It is important for physical therapists to have deep knowledge about their work and also the movement system. Sad, but true, people often judge physical therapists what they do, rather their knowledge as professionals. Therefore, it is a paramount fact to understand the movement system.

The Human Movement System

The human movement system comprises the anatomic structures and physiologic functions of a human body when both of them interact to move the whole body or any of its parts. The definition of Human Movement System is broad, intentionally. HMS is non-specific to physical therapy performed by the other healthcare professionals, and constituents outside the prevalent health care system, and also can recognizable, understandable and most importantly usable. A Physical Therapist should know about the fact that s/he doesn’t “own” the HMS, the person should collaborate with other healthcare partners to work more efficiently.

Practice of Physical Therapist and the Human Movement System

To start with, it is important for a physical therapist to understand the fact that Human Movement System is a complex behavior within a specific context. The primary work of a physical therapist to provide a perspective on purposeful, precise, and efficient human movement system across the lifespan based upon the synthesis of his/her distinctive knowledge about the movement system and also expert knowledge in mobility and locomotion. The job description of a physical therapist also includes the examination and evaluation of the movement system to provide a customized and integrated plan of care to achieve an individual’s goal-directed outcomes. PT also maximize an individual’s ability to engage with and respond to his/her environment using moving related interventions to minutely optimize individual’s functional capacity and performance.

Theoretically, PTs should take care of the person’s entire movements and later analyze them to provide him/her a healthy body. Staring from flexing of a wrist to the steadiness of standing on one leg or from breathing pattern to the heart rate, everything should fall under PTs work. However, sometimes in practice, the over-reaching concept of movement analysis gets undermined by the individual techniques used or by the various “domains” of a physical therapist practice. However, PTs need to update themselves due to the behavioral changes in the healthcare system and remain relevant.
