Classification
Though there are many ways to classify neuropathy, an important fact to know is that neuropathy affects the nerves of your peripheral nervous system. Your central nervous system is made up of the brain and spine. Your peripheral nervous system, on the other hand, consists of every other nerve throughout your body. This is important to know because your nerves act as a network to get signals to and from your brain to the body.
Types of nerves
The three types of nerves in the peripheral nervous system are the motor, sensory and autonomic nerves. Each has a specific role to play. When damaged, each also has its own unique set of symptoms. Sensory and motor nerves are responsible for your sense of touch and temperature. You also feel pain and movement care of these nerves. When damaged they can show as pins and needles, burning or freezing pain, lack of balance and coordination. Autonomic nerves are responsible for your body’s automatic functions. When damaged, they manifest as increased heart rate, abnormal blood pressures, diarrhoea and/or constipation, and abnormal sweating.
Treatment
If you have any of these symptoms be sure to see your doctor right away. They might be able to prescribe neuropathy treatment to help relieve the pain. There are medications available to help alleviate the pain of neuropathy, but you must know that many of them have side-effects. With your doctor's help, there might be a pill out there that actually works for you. In any case, it is in your benefit to make some lifestyle changes.
For one, reduce damage to your nerves by having ergonomic chairs and better keyboards. You must also change your diet. Lots of water always helps, even with neuropathy. Smoking is also a big no-no when you have neuropathy to deal with. Regularly massaging your feet is also a great way to rehabilitate the nerves that you cannot feel down there. Walking is a huge problem and can you to fall. Be wary of this fact and you just might be able to successfully manage neuropathy. Do not lose hope just because there is no real cure for neuropathy. A normal life is still possible but you just have to take a few extra precautions to be able to do so.
