5 Ways to Find A Leak In Your Home

Sometimes, no one can locate the leak in your home except a plumber with a special camera to put down the pipes. However, the faster you find a leak and get it fixed to the less damage and the less impact on your water bill. Here are 5 ways to detect a leak.

1 - What Do You Hear? If it’s a drip, drip, you can probably identify the leaking faucet. This sounds so simple but it’s often overlooked in a busy, noisy household. That little drip can waste significant amounts of water – noticeable when your water bill comes in the mail. Worse, you may hear a running water sound. Don’t ignore it; it could a leak under your floors or somewhere in the wall where you can’t see the damage. For example, one homeowner heard a leak that was under the shower full; another thought they were hearing something but didn’t have any idea what it was until they saw the wet spot on their outside wall. If you hear it and can’t find it, check your water meter. If it’s turning when nothing in the house is turned on, it may be time to call a professional plumber to find the problem.

2 - Wet Spots Outside. If a portion of your yard suddenly feels soggy or there’s a wet spot on your patio wall, it could be water coming up from an underground leak. If you’re lucky, it’s just a small problem with your landscape watering system. Not so lucky, when a break in your main water line bubbles up to the surface. Again, if you have doubts, check the water meter.

3 - Look for Evidence of a Leak. Pipes that move water through your home work under pressure so check the areas around your plumbing. Pipes can become corroded; fitting can come loose or cracks can develop – especially in areas of hard freezes. Look for mildew or mold, darkened surfaces or rippled wood. You may even find a small puddle – don’t blame the kids if it’s coming from the plumbing! Also, be aware of hot spots on your floor if your pipes run under them – a hot spot could be a hot water leak.

4 - Check under Vanities and Sinks. Get out your flashlight and get down on your hands and knees for a close inspection. Follow the line of the exposed pipes and look for droplets of water – especially on the U or lower areas of the pipes. Run your hands along pipes to see if they feel damp. In doubt? Put a bowl or dish under the possible leak. It will collect any water from a leak.

5 - Are your Toilets Talking to You? If you hear water running in a toilet that hasn’t been flushed, it could be a sign of a leak that has dropped the water level in the tank enough to trigger the float value to add water. A sticking flush valve can also keep water running. In this case the flow is continuous and can add up in a hurry. If you can DIY – if not call a plumber.

Let your water meter be your guide and make a professional, licensed plumber your friend. It’s a good idea to check that water meter occasionally even if you don’t suspect a leak – you may be surprised. If you have a water-wasting leak and you can’t locate it or you can’t fix it yourself, don’t wait. Call Ace Home Plumbing Contractor Phoenix right away. Water is too precious to waste and your water bill is probably high enough with just your regular usage.
