A Civil Servant Goes Farming

The civil service in the colonies was much maligned, but then it is everywhere and this is an ode to a civil servant who decided to go farming, something many of then did and formed the back bone of the agricultural industry, or at the very least a couple of the bones in the back bone!

Thank God for his mercies and benefits past

I'm shot of this office and service at last

I've worked pretty hard from nine until four

and surely no man should be asked to do more?

From nine in the morning till quarter to one

I haven't a clue how we ever got done

just a glance at the paper and perhaps a good hunch

on a couple of cross words then someone says Lunch!

From two until four is another great strain

what if there's a letter that must catch the train?

I dictate it and check it as quick as can be

and was just going to sign it when in comes the tea!

From nine until four I always did say

are pretty long hours as they spoil ones day

from nine until one would be plenty me thinks

as that would give time for a round on the links.

However next week I'll indulge in the pleasure

of taking up farming which gives one the leisure

to rise in the morning or stay in one's bed

one's boys do the work, or so it is said?

From many years of services rendered

My pension I'll use, it is intended

for the pigs and the sheep

and the chickens I'll keep

Now down on the farm I'm doing quite well

I've borrowed some money against what I'll sell

and be in a position to see some return

threefold and more from the profits I earn

My wife of course who doesn't know

keeps showing me bills she sees I owe

and morning to eve has many a grouse

isn't it time you built me a house?

Have patience my dear it wont be long

that sow lost her litter, something went wrong

and the tractor just broke that connecting rod

You can not blame me for it was an act of God

The cow in calf that died by the river

it might have been something wrong with its liver

it could have been kidneys red water or gall

it's probably nothing.. just died that's all

And as for the life, it's a life after all

not sitting and watching a clock on the wall

you have to remember the day we go broke

we've no more to lose and that's quite the joke!

So let's thank the Lord for the gift that he's giving

by teaching us here the art of good living

has nothing to do with amassing great wealth

but living serenely and keeping good health
