Heart Failure

A Mothers Love & Pain

I knew she was ill, but not how ill. I knew she was fatigued,

not how fatigued. She had a new husband and baby, life was great.

I got her phone call, tears and disbelief, I got her phone call and cried.

Heart failure. A diagnosis of the elderly. Not a thirty-six year old mother of three

I heard the word and forgot the world. ( I cried to the heavens "It should be my fate!")

I knew she was ill, but now how ill. I knew she was fatigued...

Doctors and nurses in a hospital room. My daughter in the bed.

Pills and prognosis. A nightmare, a tragedy, impossible to relate.

I got her phone call, tears and disbelief, I got her phone call and cried.

She doesn't like taking medication. Never did. Doesn't like being sick.

Never will. Heart failure. Two words that filled her with terror that would not abate.

I knew she was ill, but not how ill. I knew she was fatigued.

How do you fit heart failure in your life? Between new baby feedings

and your 1 month wedding anniversary date?

I got her phone call, tears and disbelief, I got her phone call and cried.

Weeks go on. The words heart failure lose some of its horror. Life goes on,

though without the same innocence for her, her husband and kids. Who wait....

I knew she was ill, but not how ill. I knew she was fatigued.

I got her phone call, tears and disbelief, I got her phone call and cried.

When I think of healthcare available to all I think of my daughter. She was living a good life. Making money in a good job. Then she was sick. So sick. Time was filled with prayers and tears. She was on disability from her job. She had an fmla leave. But her time for fmla was up. Her job let her go. Her insurance went to cobra which is $500 a month just for her. The disability company decided they had gone as far as they wanted to and took her disability away. Now one year later, my daughter still can't work. They are scraping by to pay for her cobra and her husbands insurance. Her good job is gone. The money is gone. And she is beginning to understand what kind of world this is when you are not in good health. With the amount of money and healthcare that we have available to us, it is only available for those that can pay.

So now, with most of the crisis past. I get her phone call, tears and disbelief, I get her phone call and cry. My Grandpa always said it was a good life if you don't weaken. Now I can add or get sick.

There but for the grace of God goes you...
