What is 16 march in Latvia? It's day when former members of Latvian SS legion marches through the streets. But if we look on situation from different angle one couldn't even imagine Crimea would become Russian again last spring. The day of referendum was the 16th march. Interesting coincidence. The same day Latvian former SS legionnaire walk through the Riga center with raised Latvians banners. Often you could see even Latvian officials in the meeting and it's really disgusting (in my opinion).
March 16 - a particularly controversial date when passions run high in Riga. The authorities are afraid to conduct a formal survey of Riga on whether to allow or prohibit the procession because they know - the survey will be a failure. Call it referendum instead of survey, if you like. The government representatives will say it is necessary to protect the minority from the majority, but why should the few dictate the rules to all the society and why should we allow them to rewrite European history?
On the other hand there is nothing bad in remembering fallen warriors, I totally understand families of fallen legionnaires. Definitely WW2 was real tragedy for them and the society must respect them.
But there is really dangerous aspect in legionnaire marches in Riga.. this march is challenging European core values and creating new borders inside the society. I am afraid there is an element of rewriting European history and even glorification of Nazi.
If legionnairs really want to honor fallen victims, why should they march with Latvian flags, sing legionnaire songs and challenge the society?
Couple of days ago I saw radical newspaper DDD, which means "Deoccupation, decolonization, decommunisation" and by it's scandal content is pretty similar to the French Charlie.. But! Vice-versa, it challenges European values. They stand against legalization of gays, liberal Europe, spread xenophobic opinions against Jews, Russians and other minorities. Oh, and one more detail: this DDD calls Ukrainian warriors act of brave similar to the "legionnaire" act of brave. So, they put equal sign to Ukrainian ATO warriors and legionnairs in WW2, thus giving for official Kiev rivals another chance to call Ukrainian army as "nazis".
Some day ago I said "Je seus Charlie",but will I say "Je seus DDD" for rewriting history and glorification of Nazi? I doubt it very much.
