Fine Garrotes; The Weeds Of Deceipt

Perhaps we can never know the truth. Perhaps we can only lie to ourselves about our knowledge and our certainty. However that does not mean that truth, knowledge and certainty are to be laughed at and discarded as one discards an old pot cleaner or broken vacuum. If there be unattainability about truth, knowledge and certainty then perhaps it is to lies, ignorance and uncertainty that we should turn our attentions. Not to worship, but to diminish.

Perhaps the diminishment of lies, ignorance and uncertainty is our healthier goal. It would certainly be a life-long project; one that leaves a positively diminished world behind us rather the negatively diminished world of seeking the practically unattainable.

It would be like clearing away the weeds that strangle a barely visible blossom. Instead of trying to race towards the blossom until we realize that the weeds are strangling us too, we can steadily pull up each weed until the blossom is clearly visible; perhaps not to us, but to others.

If we were to seek to diminish lies, ignorance and uncertainty for others, it would of course require us to admit that the blossom might not be ours to see, but our children’s for example. Our vision might be the peace of knowing that we helped the blossom to flourish by challenging that which deceives us. We will see the weedless clearings that we have brought about.

This new vision for us would of course require a removal of ourselves from the centre of importance. It would require selflessness, acceptance of probability rather than insisting on dreams of possibility. And many of us are not up for this. Many of us wish to fulfill our dreams and many of us do; to the cost of our children and the blossom.

How many instances are there of parents glimpsing sight of the blossom only to turn to share it and find that all who might have shared lie strangled in the weeds, or are trying to diminish the weeds for their children?

That there are those parents, leaders, authorities and guides who are so focused on seeing the blossom implies that there are children, followers, subjects  and guided who might even now be being strangled in the weeds of deceit. What of them?

Of them we must make our choice. Aim for the blossom we hold to be truth, knowledge and certainty, or slowly, but surely extract the weeds that are likely to strangle us all? Including our children?

I have not the data to suggest that the deceit we fail to uproot kills more of us and our children than the natural striations of life; however if all the dead of all the wars where truth, knowledge and certainty are further distanced were put up against those who ‘died a natural death’ it might be disturbing.  But since I am merely trying to clear the weeds, I am unconcerned with not being disturbed. I more concerned about being strangled and failing to help avoid the strangulation of our children.

Lies, ignorance and uncertainty are fine garrotes.
