Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarek, his wife Suzanne and their two sons as well as a business associate are likely to be facing a variety of charges including corruption as well as murder in the deaths of over eight hundred protesters. The Prosecutor General will likely seek the charges of at least Mubarek and sons., Alaa and Gamal, including premeditated murder in the shootings that claimed the lives of those anti-regime protesters during the late January revolution that ousted the President and the former government. Those protests lasted eleven days.
Mubarak left office in February to be placed on house arrest and held at the Red Sea Resort of Sharm al Sheik. The 83 year old was treated at a hospital during the early weeks of his detainment. His sons are both being held in a Cairo prison to face charges for their part of what is being called gross abuse of public monies as well as abuse of powers for their own financial gain. Investigations into the money, much of it belonging to the public is ongoing.
In addition to the male members of the Mubarak family, Suzanne Mubarak has been released from detention at this point but according to sources, remains under investigation. Mrs. Mubarak, who was recently treated at a hospital for what is being called “heart attack like symptoms”. did turn over a substantial amount of assets but is still potentially being looked at for her role in the corruption charges. Part of those assets included the presidential mansion where the Mubarak family has lived for thirty years as well as bank accounts held by foreign accounts, many in Mubarak’s name. Many of those bank accounts, including six in Swiss banks, are currently frozen. Another man, described as a close and personal business associate of the Mubarak family, is also being indicated.
Habib Al Adlu, the former Interior Minister has already been sentenced to prison for money laundering and other corruption charges, the first of the Mubarak regime to be tried and convicted. His sentence was for 12 years.
Protesters are planning a second demonstration, this one for Friday, 27th. The first of the demonstrations accomplished the goal of removing Mubarak from office, the second plans to call for the trial of Mubarak and the others involved in the corruption charges as well as those involved in the deaths of the protesters in January. In addition, the new protests will call for all traces of the Mubarak regime to be removed from Egypt’s government and the emergency laws which were enacted by the military after Mubarak stepped down are to be removed from the books. Most of those laws were meant to address the current state of unrest and were meant to serve as a stop gap measure while the government transitioned after the end of Mubarak’s rule.
At the end of the day we can see Mubarak was a smart man, he was power hungry but not a tyrant.
