Perhaps Survival Begins at Home?: The Importance Of Foundations Before Neighbourhoods

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to fulfill it". It is a great quote; yet might be dangerously interpreted as meaning that we who can remember, do remember; and do not fulfill the past. This interpretation is dangerous because it is false. There are those of us who can remember, do remember; and yet still fulfill the past. Memory is no defense against repetition.

We are a species filled with members who do the same thing over and over again, despite remembering that the last time we did it, it did not work out well. Those of us who have been abused in some way return over and over again to an abusive cycle; perhaps hoping for a different outcome, or more frighteningly; consciously or unconsciously hoping for the same outcome.

If we believe we belong in a certain set of circumstances, memory will not prevent us from getting there. It might well facilitate our return. Strange as it might seem, there are those among us who wish to repeat history; even those parts of history which almost resulted in our annihilation.

Standing back at times, I have often wondered if there is an endemic insanity in some of us. I have heard it said that “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. It is difficult to dismiss this notion when we see other members of our species repeatedly go to apparently unnecessary warzones and then bemoan the carnage or defend the repetition of history.

There is the possibility I suppose that it is not insanity but calculated self preserving determination at work. Even so, there are times when I watch our children run again and again into environments they cannot possibly survive and wonder what exactly the difference between insanity and this particular calculated, self preserving determination is?

We might never know the essence or the origin of this calculated-insanity but experience shows different calculations can give different answers and different activities can lead to alternative, healthier outcomes. They can lead us into environments we possibly can survive, and even probably will survive, until a more mature termination of life occurs.

We don’t require being visionaries or dreamers or history-makers. The bulk of humanity is constructed from individuals minding their own business and it seems to me that minding our own business is a collectively healthy pursuit. I have certainly seen personal responsibility takers taking responsibility for their own business, and they seem healthier somehow.

From my perspective, it seems as if the common thread among the apparently calculated-insane is that they mind the business of others whilst their own business fails. It makes me think of a house (if it were conscious) taking care of the business of other houses, whilst its own foundations crumble away. It might not be as good a definition of insanity as mentioned above, yet it does seem that minding other houses as our own foundations crumble; is not technically sane.

Of those I have seen live healthier lives; I note particularly the practice of those who tend to their foundations first and their neighbourhoods second. This is not because they are self-preserving, but they recognise that a collapsing house is not a suitable base of social participation; whereas the steady house provides a secure place to talk, heal and discuss the other possible alternatives to doing the same thing over and over again. Especially those things which lead to our children running again and again into environments they cannot possibly survive.

Perhaps survival begins at home?

many people in my age group live in broken home/broken families and they end up repeating the same exact mistakes over and over again. Most of these mistakes are doing drugs. No matter what the circumstances are our how negativaly it will effect them they still do drugs because they want to either get away from there problems , they can't face who they've become, or they are addicted to the very feeling of it. I believe a human can go insane from the drug cycle. You can't think straight or have the same rational thought as your sober self would. in the past 4 years i have witnessed my friends turn into junkies or they have physcological problems that they need to deal with. sorry i'm ranting on .I agree with your article tho survival does begin at home. You have to build yourself in order to help others build themselves if they come to you. I don't have may friends anymore because i mind my own business, everybody has so many problems most of them being problems with other people. In most cases the created there own problems and they can't seem to own up to there own mistakes , this is the problem i have with a lot of people they aren't true to themselves which causes them to start breaking down mentally.
