Social Security Cuts

Today I read a report talking about an upcoming deal that President Obama is preparing to pitch to congress. The report doesn't have any details outside of stating the the proposal will cut our national deficit down by 4 trillion dollars over the next decade. There were of course two distinct catch phrases that made up the meat of the news, tax cuts and social security cuts.

For me, being almost 30 years old, it has long been an assumption that social security is basically just money down the toilet. I don't know for a fact that the fund will be long gone by the time I would be eligible to begin collecting, but I am certainly not counting on any of my money coming back to me.

This of course brings me around to the real reason why I am always perturbed by news stories like this. Why is it, that we only ever hear about these government programs when they are being talked about in terms of leveraging debt that has been incurred by the government?

Social security cuts are, even though most of us assume it a lost cause, still distinctly the property of the people by definition. Yet, the only time we hear about it is when the government, who is supposed to be safeguarding the funds for us, is instead talking about using it here or there to fix their own problems. Which by the way, have become our problems because our financial well being as a country is far from stable at the moment.

I think that generally speaking our government is set up very well. The problem as it stands in my view is pride, there is way too much talk of how things have worked in the past, or how various groups think things should work under ideal conditions. My stance is that we need to swallow our pride as a people and really stand up and talk about some real solutions instead of just shuffling our problems into a different order as we do so often. Talk of social security cuts is just one example of how we just continue beating a dead horse instead of really working toward quality solutions in today's political climate.

This article, outlining two very hot button issues in taxation and social security cuts, is a case in point for me. We should really be cutting our spending and trying to get back to our roots as an industrious nation, rather than trying so hard to continue expanding our ironically diminishing stature as one of the worlds major players in commerce and trade.

Every dime put into the SS fund is still there. The only problem is over the past 50 years, congress has borrowed the money and left IOU's for it. So it's really there, yet it's not really there. The funds should be replaced. The persons that have put into the system should rec their benefits without exception, it would be unconstitutional to take tax payers money under a set of rules and then not provide the expected benefits of that contribution when needed. I believe in means testing. If a person's net worth is one million dollars or more at age 65, they should not receive SS but should be able to buy into Medicare for the same cost as those that rec it as part of their SS benefits. Currently it costs about $110 per month. Really reasonable. SS was not intended for people that have more means to live on after retiring. It was meant for those that do not have those sorts of means to live off after retirement. And medicaid needs to be eliminated. If you don't qualify for SS/Medicare, then you just don't qualify for anything and are probably here illegally or haven't worked all your life. Your bad, sorry. Let the catholic church take care of you? Stephen
