Telling the Truth And Tolerating Each Other; A Resolution for 2012

Perhaps what follows might seem like a rather cynical approach to 2012, or indeed any year, month or day. However I assure you, it is not.

This Sunday; January 1st 2012 marks the beginning of a New Year, and yet without our calendars it is merely another cycle of what we see over and over again; the struggle of those without power and control to prevent themselves becoming drunk with the delusion of power and control; a struggle few if any win. Why? Because the delusion of power and control is the most seductive and simple form of drunkenness there is. It brings with it the destruction of sanity and sobriety.

If there really is such a thing as The Devil’s Brew, then it will come in a casket (yes I mean a casket) marked with ‘The delusion of Power.’

Despite this assertion though, I am sure there are many who will feel that my little proposition is itself a form of insanity and insobriety. Surely we above all animals have power and some of us have great power? However I say again - the delusion of power and control is the most seductive and simple form of drunkenness there is.

Many mistake the capacity to coerce, manipulate, argue, justify, punish, destroy, pardon and overturn, to be power. However, it is not power. It is merely capacity to influence. True power is the ability to attain an outcome even if that outcome is beyond our capacity to influence. We as a species cannot do this; therefore the fact that many of us believe we can attain an outcome beyond our capacity to influence, is evidence that this most seductive and simple form of drunkenness is leeching through our society – a kind of psychological holocaust driving us closer and closer to a point of criticality.

From the child in the school to the parent in the home, to the leaders of the world, the delusion of having the power to bring about a secure, stable outcome as opposed to being able to influence the path to an uncontrollable, uncertain and transient outcome is frightening. For some, the removal of this delusion is about as likely as the removal of wetness from water. They simply will not allow that they cannot make a certain thing happen and stay happened.

It is this will of theirs/ours that we would benefit most from looking at this year. If anything needs resolution it is this critically-massing will towards believing we can make and maintain something that we cannot – such as a world free from suffering or death, or a world policed by one wholly impartial government.

If there is a resolution I would like to see us all make and strive to adhere to, it is that of telling the truth and tolerating each other. It is the only antidote I can think of for preventing the kind of psychological holocaust that seems to be taking place reaching its (delusional) logical outcome – that of self-induced destruction.
