The Better Attitude;an Argument For Tolerance
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

We are all of us already guaranteed a death; yet our society and our lives might be subject to less mutilation if governed by tolerance; not intolerance, which is merely the condoning of harm escalation.

Let me be clear. In what follows I am not remotely suggesting that harmful activities ought not to be challenged, changed, dis-approved of, or even met with severe penalty. I am however suggesting that when harmful activities are met with intolerance; the results can be catastrophic; lethal; fatal.

Intolerance causes more harm than the activity which is subject to intolerance. The tolerated activity, even if it be harmful, often gives way before a better way of living. The persistent example of tolerating people can shift the blackest of angry minds. The in-tolerated activity on the other hand, frequently becomes more harmful, or even becomes harmful when it was not harmful in the first place. For example; a child kicks a ball on a piece of grassed land and the local authority puts up a NO BALL GAMES order. What was a mere childhood activity becomes a childhood deprivation; the joy of a child kicking a ball on a piece of grassed land.

Tolerance is often seen as giving permission; condoning something, but it is not.  Tolerance is more akin to recognising that this is the way things are at this time, and it might well be that the way things are at this time is indeed harmful. But it might be that they are beneficial and well motivated. Harmful phenomena are difficult to change; therefore it is better to work carefully and subtly; tolerantly, so as not to provoke a violent reaction.

Now, as I inferred on opening, I am not talking about condoning activities which are harmful, I am merely saying that if we do not tolerate activities; that is;  recognise them and consciously evaluate them and work carefully and subtly to change them if harmful those activities might organically grow to become lethal and fatal. Why?... Because the in-toleration of harmful activities is like pouring cold water on white hot metal; it eliminates the very properties which allow for facilitated change. Intolerance hardens and solidifies the very attitude that is in a state of malleable existence. In addition, it results in an explosion of gases; emotions in the case of intolerance.

The reality is that intolerance will never tolerate tolerance. That is why intolerance must be replaced by tolerance. Tolerance will always tolerate intolerance and tolerance alike. It is therefore the better attitude; the attitude that is more likely to bring about non-explosive, lethal outcomes.
