The Gay Divorce

Mitt Romney missed his big chance yesterday—after the dust-devils starting swirling around his appointment of the openly gay Richard Grenell as his Chief of Foreign Relations Policy, and Mr. Grenell’s subsequent resignation from the post, Romney had an opportunity to tame the Far Right and give himself a much-needed shot of humanity by refusing to accept that resignation.

Simply letting the fall-out fall where it may leaves the candidate looking as if he and his staff didn’t know what they were doing when they gave Grenell the appointment. But worse than that, to leave the guy twisting in the wind makes the statement, “We are too inept to know everything about our appointees, but if they turn out to be Gay, we’re just gonna cut’em loose.” No discussion, no flip-flopping (where, for once, it would have been useful) and no addressing of the civil rights issues for the LGTB community.

Perhaps I misunderstood the GOP Primaries. Weren’t they meant as a Skinner-box in which to condition the Far Right to accept Mitt over his more flamboyantly reactionary peers? Weren’t the Tea Party supposed to see each of their favorite sons and daughters go down in the struggle for acceptance on a national scale? And weren’t we Obama-ites supposed to see Mitt Romney contrasted against the ‘too’-Far Righters, making him seem a reasonable choice by comparison? That’s what I thought was happening—could I have been wrong?

Should Romney have refused the resignation? I thought so. Just a dash of character would be so powerful for him right now! And it isn’t as if he couldn’t turn around next week, under cover of some new distraction, and replace Mr. Grenell with a straight guy. But, no. The thick-headedness I’ve come to expect from the GOP will not falter—even if it guarantees Obama his second term (not that the President hasn’t already done that himself).

The evangelicals of the GOP have stepped on their 'third rail'—equating equal rights for LGBT with an attack on their religious freedom. The progress of humanism in the growing acceptance of the LGBT community has become too strong for any national candidate to oppose. And coming, as it does, well after the legislative struggles for race equality and gender equality, the issue is seen as one which has gone on too long for people of good conscience to countenance its continued side-stepping by the Holy Rollers crowd.

Can even the GOP expect national acceptance of a candidate so out of touch with modern mores? I don’t think so. But then, they still try to roll back the advances made in legislating the equal treatment of women (50% of us)—so maybe it’s my mistake, assuming that clear-headed thinking plays any part in the Republican party.

Thought-provoking article, Mr Dunn. I'd love to wipe the slate clean and start from scratch.

You're pretty thought-provoking yourself, Doc--which slate and what scratch are you referring to?

Our lame, pitiful political choices. I'd like to have some people I can stand behind; feel inspired by. No one out there that fits that bill for me. I feel hopeless in this election. Never felt that before. Ever.

ditto, Doc. Although it isn't totally new for me--worse, it has steadily grown as the new internet-based global society finds more and more ways to distract us from our own backyards by pulling us into every other country's disputes and disasters. One level down, there are the problems of all 50 states. Then for us NYers, there's state, city, tristate-suburbs--problems have not only increased, they've begun to increase the number of levels of problems. We end up with an endless swirl of things we can't really change, and those that we can are often lost in the info-tsunami.

All of this in spite of the fact that the GOP's psychotic hero, Dick Cheney, supports gay rights because of his lesbian daughter.
