The Politics Of The Coffee Pot

There are times when no-one hears us, wants to hear us, or learn from us. There are times when we make coffee for others whereas once they brought it to us; eager to have what we have. In time they learn, and as with all learning, it begins to slow down after the initial furore, and the daily routine beds in.

They realise that what they saw as miraculous in us was merely human-being mixed with a little learning and experience that they had not yet had. Then they do not listen quite as much; do not seek us quite as much. This is when our greatest challenge arises. The challenge of being an example for what they might become. And in today’s world we desperately need examples that differ from the political, social and commercial norms we are witnessing.

Those of us who feel we might not be being listened to quite as much; not sought quite as much as we used to be, are faced with a choice; to bemoan the fact and find a lesser audience to thrill, or show a good example. But what is a good example? Surely it is an example, in which the final conclusion is this; that is a good way to live.

Once upon a time I reckoned that a good way to live was to be famous, be powerful, and be something. Then came that period of realising that fathers and mothers are fallible; that Santa Clause did indeed have a clause and even Gods could be reduced to fairies. This was a trying time. To watch your goal posts being smashed to pieces is to lose your understanding of which way to throw or kick the ball that life has given you. And who was there when my goals were smashed - The famous; the powerful; the some things? No, it was the coffee makers, in simple kitchens dressed in simple clothes. They were mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, friends, acquaintances; cleaners, cooks, humble counsellors.

There is nothing wrong with being famous, powerful and of high status; yet even those who inhabit these stations will likely find themselves either ending up in simple kitchens dressed in simple clothes, or aching to be in simple kitchens dressed in simple clothes; together with all those mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, friends, acquaintances, cleaners, cooks, humble counsellors etc.

It is wise that we venerate those who are to be found in simple kitchens; for it is not in the palaces, parliaments and studios that we are likely to be cared for – but in the kitchens of those making us coffee when our goals are smashed.

If we want to be a good example, then I suggest we learn to make coffee (or tea) for all. It is better than making laws and promises and movies for some. Blessed are the coffee makers – for they require no royalties, votes or adulation. Just a coffee when they are lost.
