Rise up and let Nigerian governments know that you mean business about your freedom. Let every person rise up, Let every family rise up, let every village rise up and let the nation rise up and take her society back. Demand for your personal liberty: freedom of expression, freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

On my last trip to Benue State, I visited Lessel, Gboko, Ikyobo, Ihugh, Korinya, Vandeikya and Adikpo Nanev and I have seen extreme suffering in the eyes of the average poor Benuean! They are yarning for a better condition of living; they are worried about the security of their families. They are asking for a better leadership that cares for the conditions that they are in right now. The majority of the people I talked to seems to be asking for, not much, but just for their basic needs: (water, electricity, safety, jobs, health and for our secondary schools and universities be opened with no interruption from strikes) They are asking for these conditions to be at least minimally fulfilled, so they will take care of their families, send their children to school and be left alone. Most importantly at this juncture, the people of Benue state are determined henceforth to vote in a safe and stable environment and their vote shall be counted. There should be no ballot stuffing, no electrate intimidation and or harassment. There should not be any thugs and surely no political assassinations. I would like to report to the political organizations in Benue that, the people will no longer stand aside and watch their freedom and civil rights be violated any more. They are willing to put up a fight! Fighting for their rights and what belongs to them; in courts to the end. For me, I am determined to educate the average Benuean how important his or her vote means for the future of this state.

My generation has been the luckiest generation in the history of this nation. We attended schools of superior academic standards, we went to schools that had roofs over our heads, that had lockers and books were provided at every beginning of school year. A lot of us left the shores of Nigeria during the Late Aper Aku administration. Though we later experienced hardship after the military coup of 1984 because the military terminated our scholarship benefits, but our suffering did not equate to the level that our young people in universities today are experiencing! This present generation has been continually molested, raped, robbed and deprived of their freedom; there come a time when a people decides that they have had enough and I think that, that time has come. Even a goat could would bite if continually burdened. I am calling the young generation of Nigerians to rise up and take their society back!

We owe to this generation a decent form of educational standard. They have endured enough hardship; they have been given the short end of the stick. We may blame them for engaging in criminal activities and thuggray, but the question remain that as life to them has been survival of the fetus, what do you expect them to do? Our young people are hungry and no one cares! What do you expect these young men and women to do when they see some people around them suddenly hop from extreme poverty to extreme wealth overnight? And much of this wealth is not generated from genuine means but rather through highly inflated contracts through political connections and or through thuggory activities on the behalf of highly placed individuals in our society. Our children lack direction but nobody cares!

What do you do with a young educated population of under 30years old that does not have the grim hope of acquiring a decent job to take care of their families, and the retirement age of a civil servant in Nigeria is between 45- 60 years old and the life expectation of an average Nigerian is 45 years old! No wander! Our children have turned to criminal activities, not that they want to, but they have to survive. Our children are lost but nobody cares!

Why should a business man, a bus operator in Benue disregard safety over the survival of his business by overloading passengers, poorly maintained vehicles and host of other things just to make up for the monies that are extorted from him at every check point by the police?

Why wouldn’t a local TIV farmer turn to ogogoro when much of his crops do not reach the market? Just visit TIV land during tomatoes and pepper seasons and witness the surplus products that are wasted and the sweat from production of these commodities not rewarded. Can you imagine a yam farmer in Zaki Biam that worked so hard to produce large and healthy yam tubers and then some eastern trader shows up and buys his yam at a below production cost leaving his with a huge amount of dept from production cost? Not only that these traders bring along with them ostentatious goods to sell them to our people and end up taking back with them the yams and the money? This kind of activity I consider rape on our farmers and no one cares!

As I travel through Benue I see poverty staring me in the face and one cares! You could see hopelessness in the eyes of our fellow human beings, especially our young people! They are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Where can they find relief? They are with no direction because the very people that should be their guardians are themselves stranded. There is fear in the eyes of every young Nigerian because there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel. It is not their fort that they are brought into this world. Our children need our help! Where would they get help from? They look for help from their government, but it is evidently that they would not be accorded any help because as it is now, they do not have any body in high places and no body cares!

I will continue to speak for the poor, the young unemployed graduates, the down trodden and the underprivilaged. When you can show the poor and the hopeless that they are human beings and there is a better life ahead of them, they are prepared to hold their hope alive and support for the fight against injustices and freedom. I am on their side and the side of the people and I will believe what they tell me vases what I hear coming from the mouth piece of governments. I will believe them if they tell me that the sun is shining in Benue or Nigeria, contrary to if the mouth pieces of Governments tells me. Are you with me?

For me, I am determined to educate the average Nigeria that there is no reason for them to fear because fear is the enemy of freedom and it breeds hopelessness in people, every person is now aware of how important his or her vote means for the future of this country and therefore they should be willing and prepared to fight for it at all means.

I ask the people of this country to put a search light on our law enforcement agencies and the judiciary and demand for its independence. It is one thing to have a government that is not choosen by the people and to make the matters worse, a judiciary that is completely compromised and infested with corrupt judges. For me I will stand on the said of justice for all.

We need a government in Abuja, in the State capitals and in all our local government areas in this country that will protect human rights, promote freedom of the press, encourage and recognize integrity, reward talents and success by creating an environment conducive to an entrepreneur spirit that will foster the creation of jobs for our youth and thereby enabling the emergence of a middle class and restore trust in our governments. That is freedom!

Please join me and let’s all rise up and take our society back. That will mean that we all care.

Samuel I. Akough
