“To thine own self be true”; but how many of us are? This question probes the very essence of who we are and what we do. Be we political animals or corrupted youths, this is a question we must ask ourselves if capable of doing so; Are we true to ourselves?

To answer such a question we require amassing facts about ourselves that are at times painful, embarrassing, humiliating and downright terrifying. These facts often lead to the simple answer; No, we are not (as a rule) true to ourselves. This can only mean we (as a rule) lie to ourselves.

I suspect this not necessarily an act of evil or harm; it is possibly a mutated form of self preservation and fearful hopefulness. We are like the proverbial ostrich; not actually burying our heads in the sand but lowering them into the shimmering heat-haze so as to present an illusion to the world rather than an authentic shape.

Of course there are those who point out that if we (as a rule) lie to ourselves; then I am probably lying to myself about the above; that we, in actual fact do not (as a rule) lie to ourselves. Touche! Yet I opened by asking how many of us are (true to ourselves) and that as yet remains unanswered.

Perhaps we ought to ask instead: how can we be true to ourselves? How can we discern our lies; their lies; any lies? These are questions driven by an historical need in us to find out who we really are and how we are doing – are we doing well? Yet perhaps; at heart, the simplest question of all that ought to ask is this – Are we okay; Am I okay. It is a simple yes or no question.

It truly probes the very essence of who we are and what we do. It asks are our politics okay; are mine okay – YES or NO? X marks the vote. And this brings us to an interesting scenario. If we were standing in a ballot box amid a global referendum and the choice was We are okay; Am I okay – YES or NO, where would be pace our X?

If we do as a rule lie to ourselves such a vote is pointless; a yes vote is no more reliable than a no vote. But let us presume we are a truth-telling electorate. We are in the ballot box. We have our card, pencil, punch whatever. Now make your mark - We are okay; Am I okay – YES or NO.........

If this were a genuine referendum and every vote was a genuine reflection of what our core reality was, I wonder what the count would be? I suspect that the results would troublesome. Perhaps that is why I find myself wondering if every ballot paper should carry a ‘Don’t Know’ option. It feels as if this might be the option for the truly, genuine, authentic voter.

We are okay; Am I okay – YES or NO or Don’t Know Please choose one option.

But I guess this all just a pipe dream. Who of us would really stand up and say from our core I don’t know? I think I would. But maybe I am lying to myself. Who Knows? Who really knows?
