Wikipedia Blackout Measure Against Sopa Law As Other Sites Protest Along

On January 16th 2012, Wikipedia along with many other major well known sites decided to have a blackout in their English site against the ’Stop Online Piracy Act’ (SOPA) law. The SOPA law is aimed at bringing to an end online piracy on the internet; a step that will definitely reduce freedom on the internet. Other common sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google, Linkedin and Mozilla have joined in the fight to stop the SOPA law from passing.

The SOPA law which is to be reviewed in the USA is a law that will simply shut down most websites with pirated content, especially media like content. By that, I mean music, videos and any other piece of content that you should legally buy but instead you download from the internet. If it is passed, most likely Wikipedia along with other pirated content sites will have to come to a close.

If you are a frequent user of the internet, ask yourself how many times you have downloaded or listened to some music for free on the internet. If this doesn’t ring a bell, remember the countless times you have dashed over to Google’s site to search for anything and everything. Imagine not being able to get this content without buying it, if it isn’t originally free. Terrible isn’t it?

Wikipedia announced on January 16, 2012 that they will have a 24 hour shut down on their English website as a way to protest against the SOPA law which may be passed. With an average of 25million daily users, yes 25million daily users, of the Wikipedia English site, it will truly be a big move towards the protest.

On Wednesday of the same week, Google has promised to post a link on their homepage image commonly known as their doodle with a link to fight against the SOPA act. Reddit has as well decided to have a 24hour blackout on Wednesday against the SOPA law. Facebook, the common social network with over 500 million daily users (wow!) will address this by changing their homepage to something against the SOAP law. Mozilla has already taken a step by completely changing their website to urge visitors to take action against the SOPA law.

Frankly, there are tons and tons of websites out there aimed at stopping the SOPA law from being passed. Individuals as well haven’t been left behind in this. United States citizens can post their say against the law from Wikipedia’s statement and many other ways. All in all, the website at large is against the SOPA law, and you too should join us against the SOPA law; if you love the internet :)

I agree that SOPA is a bad idea. It will certainly create more problems than it solves.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I sent 2 messages to my Senator in Missouri to not vote for it. I'm pretty serious about this not going through. :-o Hopefully her or one of her workers reads it.

It only scares me about what will happen if this bill gets passed, and what's bad is even if it does get passed, and hurt every small online business out there - it won't even stop the REAL pirates out there. It's not hard to get music from different rotating proxies. People who know what they're doing can build a black market for software that rotates proxy servers.
