Mediterranean Diet Tips

Eating foods that are found abundant on the land surrounding the Mediterranean Sea is the basis for the Mediterranean Diet. I will provide you with tips on choosing and preparing foods that are common to the Mediterranean Diet. The mild climate of the Mediterranean Region allows the inhabitants to grow year round fruits and vegetables. Of course the sea provides an abundance of fish and seafood. The health benefits of following the Mediterranean Diet include lower risks of heart disease, diabetes and even some cancers. Basically the Mediterranean Diet helps to lower LDL Cholesterol levels. All this while you don’t go hungry.

Mediterranean Diet Tips: Olives and Olive Oil.

Olives and Olive Oil are the backbone for the Mediterranean Diet. The fat found in Olives is called monounsaturated fat also know as a good fat. You need to have low LDL cholesterol levels and high HDL cholesterol levels to help remain healthy. You can add olives to your salads and pizza or just eat them as a snack. Drizzle olive oil on your salad, pasta or fish. Instead of consuming butter or margarine use olive oil instead.

Mediterranean Diet Tips: Vegetables and Fruits

Pile on the Vegetables and fruits. Nine servings during the day of fruits and vegetables is not uncommon. Potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, avocados are great choices vegetable choices. Grapes, oranges, berries such as blueberries, raspberries and black berries as well as oranges and strawberries fit in nicely. The more color in your diet the healthier your diet is. Fruits and vegetables are high in Antioxidants. Guess what? Eating large amounts of fruits and vegetables helps lower your LDL cholesterol levels.

Mediterranean Diet Tips: Yogurt

You need calcium in your diet and yogurt is a good source for calcium. Help keep your bones strong by eating two to three servings each day of yogurt. Yogurt must be plain yogurt with no additional ingredients such as fruit. Use yogurt in place of sour cream when making dips. I use yogurt and olive oil as toppings for my potatoes.

Mediterranean Diet Tips: Nuts and Seeds

Hungry during the day and need a snack? Turn to nuts and seeds. Eat a handful of walnuts, almonds, pecans, hazelnuts or pine nuts to squelch your hunger. Just remember, nuts are high in calories so don’t overdo it.

Mediterranean Diet Tips: Fish

Finally the protein. Fish is a great source of protein and a good source for omega-3 fatty acids. Once again the fat found in fish help lower LDL cholesterol levels. Two to three servings a week is acceptable. Seafood also protects your heart from degeneration. You can grill or bake fish in lemon juice and seasonings such as Mediterranean Salt, pepper and oregano.
