5 Tips for Being Positive In Tough Times

Even if you're someone who has a postitive attitude to life it's still generally harder being positive in tough times, particularly if you appear to be experiencing a lot of tought times. However, for the people who have a tendency to be more negative, tough times bring them even more problems as they are far more likely to suffer some form of stress or ill health due to their negativity than the people who have a more positive attitude. Although some people will use the excuse 'that's just the way I am', that's what it is - just an excuse. By adopting a few different strategies it's quite possible to change from being predominatly negative to predominantly positive. If you give it a go you will definitely reap the benefits of the change.

Here are five tips for being more positive even in tough times.

1. Remind yourself of positive things

When I was growing up my religious parents were constantly telling me and my siblings that we should count our blessings. Being a rather miserable child, I remember gritting my teeth every time they said it. However, being older and wiser, I accept that focussing on the positive is healthier than constantly feeling miserable and wishing things were different. Try writing a list of all the positive things in your life, or create a montage of positive images that mean something to you, or record your positive achievements. It doesn’t matter what you do as long as you create something that you can continually refer to. Don't hide your list or picture in a drawer - keep it visible.

2. Shift your thoughts

If you have a tendency to always focus on the negative, particularly when times are tough you need to turn off that negative voice in your head. Being negative is very draining and even in really difficult times it’s important that you don’t indulge in lots of negative self-talk. Stopping yourself from doing this means adopting a more positive mindset. Every time the negative voice even starts - shut it off and turn to something positive. It may be difficult at first, but the more you practice the more likely you are to make being positive a habit.

3. Have some fun

It can be really hard to remember when times are tough to remember to have fun, particularly if you think it’s going to cost you money that you may not have. Identify things that you really enjoy doing that will give you pleasure and make sure that you do something every week. It's almost impossible to be negative about something you enjoy

4. Learn something new

Brad Sugars a well known entrepreneur, bestselling author and founder of ActionCOACH a business coaching company, always tells people at his seminars that he reads one book every week. The reason? Because he constantly wants to increase his knowledge. Reading a book every week may not be your thing but the principle of continuous learning is sound and one worth replicating. Choose something new that can fit into your life and that you’ll commit to.

5. Avoid spreading misery

There's nothing wrong in sharing a problem and listening to someone else’s advice. However, misery can be contagious. So make sure that you don’t get trapped into a cycle of misery that makes not only you feel awful, but also the people you interact with on a daily basis. If this resonates with you, then it’s a habit that you want to break.

Summary

Staying positive when life is tough can be really challenging, but if you make a commitment to adopt a more positive mindset it does get easier if you take specific actions to think, speak and act more positively. As you adopt new habits, you will find in time that it becomes easier to be more positive on a daily basis. Being negative can have a poor effect on your health and the lives of people around you, so if you need to start making changes to be more positive – start today,

I agree with everything you have said. Attitude is indeed contagious. No one want to be around a grumpy person. Maybe it's just me but I don't find it hard to say something good about almost everything. Have a great day bis-coach.

Hi Clark Thanks for taking the time to comment. It's great that you find it natural to say something good about most things because it's not so easy for everyone. Beverley
