An Exercise In Priorities!
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

Visitors! My sister arrives tomorrow, as does my father in law. My husband returns home after a week away (no, he’s not a visitor but he will appreciate a fresh bed!) and my parents arrive in three days time.

In fifteen minutes I leave for work so my morning shower became an exercise in cleaning the main bathroom. This is what I call multitasking.

There is so much to do and here I am, fifteen minutes from fleeing out the door, sitting with my laptop and blessing the days I went to community college and learnt to touch type on those old typewriter things you sometimes see in museums nowadays!

This is truly an exercise in priorities.

I have a list of could and should but also a list of must. Somehow this needs to juggle with my list of want and important-to-me.

These following three things help me keep life balanced.

Delegate:

It’s not my responsibility to clean up the Thomas track that’s overtaken our living space this week. I also don’t need to pick up discarded pajamas that are thoughtlessly tossed (literally) aside in favour of school uniforms. I can turn a blind eye to this mess for now.

There’s time for that when the kids get home from school

It’s easy to become the household servant and then wonder why we’re disgruntled, unhappy and overworked. Not to mention why we never get to the things in life that are important to us.

Make a List:

I’m not necessarily a list advocate although sometimes they can be really helpful.

What do I ‘think’ I need to do before my visitors arrive tomorrow? I brainstorm it all. Everything from mowing the grass (well that’s going at the bottom!!) to making up beds and cleaning the toilet.

I also add in ‘my things’ like publishing a new Street Article and checking in on Squidoo.

Having numbered the list in order of priority I can then start at the top. Apart from providing focus it offers a sense of accomplishment when I cross them off. Many of these jobs are fairly thankless otherwise.

I don’t number the ‘me’ things. It’s easy to reward myself with those things and they’ll easily and naturally slot in. This might be at afternoon teatime, when I want to sit for a while with my feet up, or tonight when I’m too tired for scrubbing the toilet!

Don’t sweat the small stuff.

I once had a sign on my front door. It was just hand written on a piece of paper but declared “Welcome to a working replica of a lifestyle in progress”.

It summed up my house perfectly when I was a newly wed with a full time job and extra curricular activities every night of the week. Between the drama group and the hockey training there wasn’t much time for an immaculate home.

Knowing and accepting my limitations gives me personal permission to present a less than perfect face to the world. Most people won’t even notice if your house is picture perfect, or a bit messy around the edges, and if they do (and care) it’s certainly not your concern!

So here I sit as the evening lengthens to late. That list is still pretty long. Well, I’ll admit it; I still haven’t cleaned the toilet and that was surely somewhere near the top!

BUT, I am about to publish a new article! Yahoo! Well the whole point is priorities!

Never mind the rest; there’s always tomorrow! And if it doesn’t all get done before everyone arrives?

Perhaps I can delegate my visitors will help with that list!

I am good at list making and learning how to not sweat the small stuff but I am still getting my head around the delegating part. Good advice Heather, thank you.

Maybe it has something to do with our life experience... my husband is great at it but it's part of his job description! Mother's easily fall into the 'maid' role. It's wrong but easy to do!

I'd help you. I specialize in toilets. That's the thing about entertaining, you have to clean the house, shop for groceries, plan the meal/s. Bake a cake, if that's your thing. It's a lot to do, even when the guests are family. I know, you can recruit the kids!

You sound like a good person to have around Joan! My lovely sister came armed with cookies, did four hours of ironing (I'm not kidding here!) and shined my kitchen! How can I complain?! The next morning she was gone! :-(

I have made the point of not helping around the house by serving breakfast on yesterdays dirty dishes. That was for sure an eye opener!

From what I read they are all family, give them work to do. Your parents gave you a lot to do as a kid, get them back. Husband well in his case he should be free of all duties let him put his feet up and take it easy. Sister another women, get her working. Father-in-law, he is like your husband feet up and beer in hand. (without him you wouldn't have a husband) Kids give them work and as for you, in front of the computer, articles please.
