Changing the Impossible to Possible

How often do you think about how you can change what seems impossible to possible? Of course down the centuries many scientists, doctors, inventors, engineers ... have done just that and after many years of perseverance have introduced to the world things that have had an impact often on global basis. Many of them would have experienced people telling them that what they were working on was impossible, but that didn’t stop them from moving what appeared impossible to possible.

Of course it’s not just the inventors, scientists, doctors ... who change the impossible to possible .  There are numerous examples of where people have overcome extraordinary odds and accomplished great feats.  There are parents who have given birth to a child with disabilities who are told by doctors that they’re children won’t be able to walk and talk. The parents subsequently refuse to listen, research and learn what they can and refuse to accept the gloomy prognosis. They do things their way and the child manages to walk and talk.  They turn the impossible to possible.

Similarly there are adults who have accidents or soldiers that are badly injured who are told they will never walk again and then they go on to defy the odds and start walking.  Is this because the medical profession were just wrong?  No of course not. Many times the medical profession still can’t explain what has happened and the only rational explanation is the determination, belief and perseverance of the individual turns what seems impossible to possible,  These type of feats are replicated time and time again by people from all walks of life and in different contexts.

So what do you do when confronted with an issue that seems impossible?  Do you immediately tell yourself it’s impossible or do you have a go?  Unfortunately we’re often hampered by our own lack of self-belief and self-esteem and an inability to imagine that there is a way to turn what seems impossible to possible.

As a coach when I work with clients I try to make them ‘think out of the box’ or indulge in some ‘blue sky thinking’.  Some people find this extraordinarily difficult because their internal thoughts immediately start putting up barriers for why they couldn’t do something. And that type of thinking has often stopped them from achieving things they wanted

Does that resonate with you? Perhaps there are opportunities that you’ve missed because you thought something just wasn’t possible.  Imagine how different life would be if you decided to think differently and believe that things can be changed from impossible to possible. Difficult situations could be overcome.  You could accomplish things that you thought were only dreams. The only thing that will be stopping you is you.

If you still struggle with the concept of thinking outside of the box, think about people you admire, who have broken with convention or the perceived wisdom of how things should be done, but have gone on to achieve great things.  This may be someone famous or just someone from your own social circle.  Whoever it is, think about how they seemly defied the odds to succeed. You can change the impossible to possible, it may take a while.

So next time you find yourself saying,” it’s not possible”, turn your thoughts around and adopt a positive attitude.  Think about what you need to do to turn the impossible to possible and don’t limit yourself.  And when you’ve decided what you need to do and what you’re going to do – make sure you act and do it!

You're right! Changing the impossible to possible is a matter of deciding what you need to do, what you're going to do - and then taking action to do it. Good article.
