How I Changed My Negative Attitude

The Old Monster In Me

I still struggle with negative thoughts and feelings towards people; I used to be a pretty negative person. In high school I was quite 'gossipy' and always ready to talk about someone. This wasn't because I was a mean person, it was because I was jealous.

Controlled by envy and negative thoughts towards people made it hard for me to be around certain them just out of pure jealousy. They would succeed at something and I would burn inside. I hated seeing their successes and accomplishments. I still struggle with it today, but my negative and jealous attitude has slowly eased away.

At work people marvel at how positive I am, and that is something that hasn't changed. I have a hard work ethic, and always am very positive on the outside, and now I am starting to be positive on the inside as well.

Time for a Change

A few months ago I realized I wasn't happy. I had great friends, a great job, things were going good, but something wasn't right. I was even starting to feel sick and after the doctor couldn't figure out anything that was wrong with me I self diagnosed myself as unhappy. Sure, work was going phenomenally, which can be a success in itself, but I wasn't happy with my personal life. My routine seemed to be the same, on a rotating hamster wheel and I knew things had to change. I challenged myself to find my inner positive energy.

I moved to the city, started getting involved in more activities, volunteering at the animal shelter and setting goals for myself. This made me feel like I had a purpose and allowed me to see improvements in my attitude. I feel much more satisfied with myself and am working hard to keep the positive attitude on the inside and out.

Tips to find your inner positive energy

There is nothing wrong with a little self-improvement, and there is nothing quite like being truly happy with yourself. Some people say "how are others supposed to love you when you don't even love yourself?" This may not apply to everyone, but it quote applies to me. It helped me become the more positive person I am today and the person I am on the road to being.

  • Set a goal for yourself- it can be related to anything
  • Step out of your comfort zone- try something new, take a risk, start a challenge
  • Keep yourself busy
  • Be proud of any small successes and accomplishments
  • Tell yourself something you like about yourself every morning
  • Take up a new hobby/class/activity- pottery, painting, exercise, etc.
  • Keep tabs on my new website- Motivational tips, share your success stories, Inspiration and Encouragement to reach your goals. (just had to throw that in there!)
  • When something negative happens, try and put a positive spin on it (this can be very challenging in some circumstances of course)
  • Don't give up!

This world needs some more positive energy, and it can be done one person at a time.
