How To Accept Criticism At Work

None of us can do a perfect job all the time, which is why from time to time, we're going to make mistakes at work. In that case, we need to prepare ourselves for any criticisms and reminders on how we can do our job better. However, many of us tend to be resistant to or dread criticism. The moment we're told that we made a mistake, we immediately realize where and how we went wrong, and start thinking, "Yes, I got it, I got it, you don't have to tell me" when we're being told what we should have done instead.

It's definitely not easy to hear criticism, and even harder to accept it. None of us like admitting that we're wrong, and it's even worse when someone knows that we're wrong. However, while it's true that criticism can be embarrassing and discouraging, ignoring it can affect our jobs and won't help us improve at all.

One of the things you should do when your boss is providing you with comments regarding your work is to listen carefully. You might need to resist the urge to interrupt and defend yourself, but this will only make you look, well, defensive and like you're making excuses for any of your errors. Save your comments and questions for when the person is finished talking. You want to let the other person know that you are paying attention and seriously considering what is being said. While you're listening, don't just think that all the comments are purely negative. Learn to acknowledge that the other person is making valid points. By doing so, you're becoming more open to learning something new and figuring out how to improve your performance for next time.

The important thing to remember is that the criticism isn't personal. Your boss just wants to make sure that the job is being done correctly and is providing you with the necessary guidance to ensure that things will go off without a hitch. So there's no point in holding a grudge.

Whether you're undergoing coaching or are receiving criticism for a job that isn't 100% well done, you need to remember that the other person has a point and that he or she may be seeing something about yourself and your performance that you don't see clearly. That is why you need to acknowledge and accept any comments. At the same time, you need to step back and think carefully before responding to the criticism so you won't spark a disagreement, but instead initiate a discussion on how you can further improve.
